    About this property

A cosy retreat with open fire, in an idyllic situation on the 3000-acre Crofts Estate, surrounded by the Galloway Hills.
"Idyllically set on a 3000-acre estate:"
Enjoying an idyllic situation on the 3000-acre Crofts Estate, surrounded by the Galloway Hills, these holiday cottages have enviable, dramatic views towards the Solway Firth and Cumbrian Hills beyond. Accessed along a private drive, and adjoining a cluster of well-maintained estate buildings, Stable Cottage (ref UUD) makes a romantic hideaway for two, offering stylishly furnished accommodation – its walls adorned with the original work of various Scottish artists. The larger Victorian detached Gardener’s Cottage (ref UXT) has been elegantly furnished, and features an attractive shared garden with a bridge over a burn and a small waterfall. Arkland Mill (ref sttz) stands detached with a lovely large garden, a summerhouse and its own bridge over the stream. Marwhin House (swwr) and Marwhin Cottage (ref swws) also stand detached, situated within 25 yards of each other, still with there own privacy, the latter two properties being set in gardens with a delightful stream and pond. Woodland walks and hillside trails radiate from the doorstep. Dumfries lies just 12 miles away, where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and museums, as well as a good theatre. Castle Douglas (8 miles) is a traditional market town with individual shops specialising in food and local produce. There are many beautiful beaches within easy reach along the Solway, and the National Trust Threave Gardens, 8 miles, makes for an interesting day out. Other tourist attractions in the area include the Galloway Kite Trail, the Galloway Forest Park and golf courses and museums in Dumfries. Village shop and pub within 4 miles.

"This charming cottage is in a very peaceful setting. It is a perfect base for exploring the area."

"A beautiful quiet location. A very cosy cottage with everything you could need. A great place to go to chill out. Lots of wildlife to sit and watch. Some lovely local walks."

"Our holiday, sadly shortened by Hurricane ALI, bringing down power lines and trees, was extremely enjoyable. The house-keeper, Margaret, helped us enormously when, on the Wednesday morning, with no power in the cottage, and all the access roads partially blocked, we had to made a quick evacuation, and go to stay with a friend 15 miles away. We sincerely hope that Margaret and her neighbour, who was also very helpful to us, will have managed to get through the several days without electricity in the wake of the hurricane, and we are determined to go back again one day soon.It was one of the best cottages we have ever rented."

"This cottage is great for a couple seeking a quiet comfortable place for a break. The only things which we were not happy with were lack of hanging space for clothing and absence of WiFi"

"A lovely welcome and a beautiful location. There are not many amenities in this area but that's not a fault and just how it is in the middle of woodland and open land. The stables is quirky with a great kitchen/open living area and a super large fireplace that burns logs on a grate. Very cosy. We had all the wood we could use on hand chopped outside the door. The bed was super comfy. Red squirrels were seen every day, especially in the morning from windows without even having to look for them. Ideal base for visiting the Galloway Forest and easy access to all areas. We enjoyed our stay very much."

"This is the second time we have been to Stable Cottage in a year and we will be back again soon. Thanks to Margaret and Brian for the warm welcome, top notch facilities and generous wood supplies!"

"A lovely stay for myself, wife and Rodney the Rhodesian ridgeback. The cottage is set in acres of beautiful landscape which is perfect for exploring and walking and a lovely log fire to come back to. The facilities are fantastic, everything you need is there. The only downside is it’s a long way from a pub if you fancy a few pints at the end of the day then the only option is to get some beers from Tesco. Couldn’t fault this place otherwise. The most comfortable bed I’ve slept in for a long time a great nights sleep!"
