About this property

Reeth 5.7 miles. Shepherd's Lodge is a delightful, stone-built semi-detached farmhouse is located on a working hill sheep farm, attached to the owner's family farmhouse in Arkengarthdale, just five miles from Reeth, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Set in a splendid and secluded location, this first-class cottage has lovely views across open pastureland, a babbling brook and the magnificent Arkengarthdale countryside within easy reach. It is an ideal retreat for those looking to get away from it all, re-charge their batteries and enjoy true country living, while exploring the wild and rugged surroundings. Traditional yet stylish throughout, this lovingly-restored cottage boasts underfloor heating provided from a biomass heating system and a wonderful blend of furnishings, which enhance the original features of this old farmhouse. The ground floor sitting room has three-piece recliners and a feature fireplace containing a woodburning stove, making it a great place to curl up with a good book. The adjoining kitchen is open-plan, with arched doorways leading to the utility room and a dining area, set by the main window to take full advantage of the long distance views. The room is large and social, a great place to prepare a meal and relax after a day's outing on the local fells. Upstairs, the master bedroom boasts a super-king-size sleigh bed, a feature fireplace, lots of storage space and the added benefit of a view across the attached farmyard. The second bedroom has twin beds, which can be made into a super-king-size double on request, while the main bathroom features a lovely freestanding bath and Velux windows, letting lots of light into the room. Outside, the south-facing patio enjoys magnificent views across the adjoining meadows; after a day out and about, you can sit here with a refreshing drink and relax. There are excellent walks from the doorstep, some easy, but the majority are more demanding so this isn't a walking area for the faint hearted! The cottage is set between The Charles Bathurst Inn, which has a fine reputation for good ale and excellent dining, and The Tan Hill Inn. Known as the inn 'on top of the world' and standing at 1732ft above sea level, it is Britain's highest inn. Just over five miles away is the popular village of Reeth, where Swaledale and Arkengarthdale meet. It is only 12 miles to the historic town of Barnard Castle in Teesdale, County Durham, which is home to the award-winning and iconic Bowes Museum. The market towns of Hawes, Leyburn and Richmond, Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force are also all nearby, providing even more walking and cycling routes amongst the rolling countryside hills. For days out while at the property, you can also visit the popular Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre and discover why Wensleydale cheese is so popular. For those wishing to get away from it all and enjoy peace and tranquillity, this one ticks all the boxes!

Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lovely rolling hills and spectacular views, Reeth boasts a colourful history. Reeth offers a fantastic base for exploring North Yorkshire's beautiful, sweeping countryside, whether you choose to discover the caves, cliffs, waterfalls or the plethora of walking and cycling routes that circle this vibrant and varied landscape.

Warm and cosy with the beautiful log fire but plenty of space for the family with its well equipped large kitchen diner. Sitting round the table with a hearty meal taking in the breath taking views of the farm. We could not have been made more welcome by the adjoining owners making our little boy's holiday with horse rides...a lovely unique stay on a working farm in a beautiful property we will be back!

We had a great welcome, and the owners were hand if necessary. We really enjoyed being on a working farm. The area is really beautiful with lots of walks and interesting places to visit. We had a lovely time, trouble is it went to quickly.

I have been staying in Swaledale since 2009 and this is the most beautiful cottage I have stayed in via Sykes. So let me give a balanced review: The cottage was exceptionally clean but there was no instructions folder - didn't need it as Helen was right next door and immediately available for any questions! Location: stunning views, remote location - access could be tricky if a low level vehicle as down as gravelled track but unless you drive a low slung sports car, it isn't an issue! Yes it is remote but it is on a working farm so you have the 'company' of the comings and goings plus the gorgeous sheepdogs plus Plenty and Henry (to little dogs) as well as 2 horses in the stable opposite. I would highly recommend making sure you have a bag of carrots and dog treats if you want to make extra friends! The comings and goings of farm life is not intrusive by the way, I found it comforting as I was on my own. The cottage is very well stocked with everything you need and if something is missing, a simple knock on the owner's door and all sorted! I stayed for 2 weeks and was offered a change of bed linen half way. Would I stay here again? Without a doubt. Only one VERY small tiny thing - no welcome pack which is a nice gesture but then, this is self-catering so you should be catering for yourself! Thank you for a wonderful stay.
