Tucked away in the peaceful village of Felixkirk, this cosy, very dog friendly holiday cottage adjoins the owner’s home and provides a very comfortable rural retreat on the very edge of the North York Moors National Park, near Thirsk. This brick built, single-storey cottage enjoys an enviable position and has been completely renovated to offer beautifully presented accommodation for 2 guests and their pets. There is a small double bedroom with under bed storage, and a sofa bed for alternative accommodation in the living room.
There is extensive garden space outside the cottage with stunning views, which is also fully fenced to allow your pets to wander in a contained area. Car parking, for two cars, is next to the cottage which is at the end of a private drive and there is storage available for bicycles. The owners are keen cyclists and can advise of lovely local and regional routes.
From the doorstep there are numerous footpaths and cycling trails and there is a renowned, traditional, dog friendly village inn serving local produce just minutes from the cottage. The village is home to a 4x4 driving centre which offers action packed days with off-road driver training and quad–biking, and at Sutton Bank, visitors can take a trial lesson at the Yorkshire Gliding Club and visit the nearby famous White Horse near Kilburn. Thirsk, 3 miles, is a quaint market town famous for its connections with James Herriot, the well-known vet and author of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, its racecourse and 15th century church. Days out can be enjoyed at Rievaulx Abbey near the wonderful town of Helmsley, as well as Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey. Board the steam train at Pickering to be transported through the stunning North York Moors to the coastal port of Whitby and explore the fishing villages at Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. The Yorkshire Dales are easily accessible by car and the historic walled city of York, 25 miles, with its iconic minster, exquisite architecture, museums and art galleries, is not to be missed when visiting Yorkshire. "This cottage is at the end of a dirty muddy track. The Cottage wasn't clean android the throws for the sofa stunk of body oder. No wardrobe or drawers in the bedroom. No outside lights.I left 2 days early and went to a hotel."
"The cottage was cosy but lacked for us space no wardrobes. The oven was dirty so we didn't use it.The grass had not been cut and the outside appeared neglected. No vacuum to tidy up and as it is dog friendly this is a must."
"Lovely peaceful location away from the noise of traffic Ellen and Simon very friendly but not intrusive"
"Excellent location really had a great time only thing that was disappointing was the wi-fi"
"Lovely little cottage in a great location. This property is dog friendly and would benefit from room diffuser or scented plug in. Otherwise lovely with everything you need in there. Great enclosed area for dogs, great walks and a lovely pub round the corner. Very pretty area."
"This is our fourth visit to the property and enjoyed it just as much as every other time. Peaceful and relaxing with everything you need for your break in the property and close enough to everything to make your break as relaxing as possible . The owners are so lovely and welcoming and very friendly. Well worth a visit regardless of the weather you will not be disappointed."
"Fabulous accommodation in a beautiful location. Secure garden for dogs, warm water outside dog shower available too which is a real bonus when you have been on one of the many walks in the local area and the dogs are filthy. Accommodation only small but as described in the advert and equipped with everything you need to make a very enjoyable stay. Would highly recommend."
"Property lacked wardrobe space and the oven could have been cleaned before arrival. Outdoor space lovely for the dogs very safe and dog wash. Owners nice and unobtrusive with a courteous call the next day to see if everything was ok on arrival. Overall nice but on the small side."
"We were very grateful for the owners finally rearranging our arrival and departure times as the cottage was empty the week before (we were driving up from Cornwall and needed to be at an appointment early morning). However, getting any commutation with the owners during the week before our visit was almost impossible as they wouldn’t return my calls as promised on their answer service. The cottage is nice and safe for dogs but it had not had a proper deep clean for a while. There was dust so thick under the bed that we had to clean our cases before putting them in our car, stains on taps and in sink, stuff left in freeze box that also needed a defrost as it could not be closed. There were crumbs around the toaster and under the tray it rests on. The sofa covers provided for the protection against dog damage were very smelly and unusable, not that we needed them as our dogs had their own beds. We washed these covers on the last day for the next guests. When staying in any accommodation guests don’t like to think someone else has stayed there before nor do we want to see any evidence of anyone else apart from an entry in the guestbook. The property has nice little touches such as a dog shower in the garden but needs a doormat big enough to stand on, no matter how hard you try you can’t stand on what is provided and shut the door behind and without any porch or outside rain cover it became a big issue with damp floors on damp days. The downside to our stay and why we will not return was that the owners stuck a hand written notice to the outside door while we were in and watching tv asking us not to leave the heating on when we went out. We had left it on low, at 15c, as it had snowed overnight. The owners reason for the complaint was that they “pay a lot for LPG”. Well we had paid to stay and it was the week before Christmas and you can check the news about it being freezing cold and a Yellow weather warning. Up until this point we would have booked again and had started the process as soon as we arrived but the note left a bad feeling; we’re not wasteful and know only too well about environmental issues but it was bitterly cold and we had paid to stay and that had included heating. The thermostat was left on 15c, if it had kicked in during the day that’s because it was cold and there was lying snow. The A19 had been closed due to the weather that night. So to sum it up;nice place if a little small, safe garden and stunning views, shame about the owners inability to communicate as this can make or break a stay. Positive contact with any guest is always important. Unless a guest trashes a property it is best to say nothing."
"Fabulous location relaxing break with the dog definitely recommend this for a couple"
"Couldn't ask for anything more."
"We stayed here to escape fireworks at home...best decision ever! The house is lovely, just what we needed, very peaceful...would highly recommend! Lots of places to visit nearby and everyone is very friendly...can’t wait to visit again...we’ll definately be back..."
