The carpets were dirty, the windows wouldn’t open as the sashes were broken and some of the glass was broken (as already mentioned in a previous review), the inside is in dire need of a repaint, the furniture was covered in dust. The kitchen floor had stale spaghetti in the corner and there were crumbs behind the microwave. The shower is mouldy and the room housing the washing machine is full of rubbish. The owner needs to spend some money on a deep clean and redecoration as it is not a place people should spend their hard earned money on for a holiday. We left early.

The owner very kindly moved a climbing frame into the garden for the children to play on and even offered to buy a couple of chickens for the children to interact with on our stay which we thought was a very kind gesture. We had some lovely trips out and the house is perfectly located for walks and family friendly activities. However, we felt the house did not meet the 4 star rating that Sykes had given it. Firstly, on walking into the house we immediately noticed the smell of cigarettes. So much so that I was worried that we’d walked into the wrong house. The kitchen cupboards were not clean and a lot of the mugs were stained. We cooked some bacon under the grill and when we pulled the grill out we found a cremated croissant at the back of the grill. The bathroom was lovely and clean. The living room was cosy but the sofa was very tired and worn out. The furniture and throw had cigarette burns throughout. The children enjoyed playing with the selection of games and we enjoyed winding down in the evenings with the log burner on. We were very disappointed with the pull out bed that was provided for my 4 year old son. The sheet didn’t completely cover the mattress and caused the mattress to curl in the corners and a worn out sleeping bag was given for him to sleep in. Unfortunately I couldn’t let my son sleep in this for the week so I had to dash out and buy a duvet and duvet set so that he had a better bed to sleep in. Their window was held open with a piece of wood which if they had knocked would have caused a very heavy sash window to come down on their fingers. One of the windows in the dining area was broken but hadn’t been sealed or covered. I am really not somebody to complain but if I am honest we were quite disappointed. I know that the owner has struggled recently with getting a cleaner to maintain the property and it must be incredibly difficult to juggle farming with maintaining a holiday rental. As an Air BnB this would be perfectly acceptable but I don’t feel the property meets the standards that would be expected by Sykes Cottages customers. I don’t think it would take much to turn the house around to make it a wonderful holiday rental but unfortunately in its present condition we would not recommend staying here.
