About this property

An exclusive and imaginative conversion of Scalegill Mill, originally an historic cotton mill dating back to 1792, with even earlier origins; this delightful stone-built, end-terrace cottage is situated on the banks of the River Aire between the Malhamdale villages of Kirkby Malham and Hanlith. Styled and furnished by the current owners, this Malhamdale cottage provides a first-class holiday retreat alongside the river and the Pennine Way, perfect for small groups of friends and family exploring this beautiful location. This Malhamdale cottage offers two delightful bedrooms and a first-class shower room with a marble worktop. There is a lovely kitchen with a dining area featuring cream, hand-painted wall units and contrasting granite worktop surfaces, a Belfast sink and an AGA, as well as beautiful multi-coloured slate flooring. Relax and unwind after a day exploring the area in the cosy sitting room, with its roaring open fire and French doors leading out into a shared courtyard. There is a stone-flagged patio set above the river and the waterfall, an ideal spot for sitting out and enjoying the fabulous views, as you bask in the warm summer sunshine. This Malhamdale cottage is set amongst several acres of communal gardens, why not take a stroll through the formal grounds and around the original Mill pond, before exploring the small woodland. Possibly one of the prettiest walks in the Yorkshire Dales, a ten minute walk down the river brings you to Malham itself. This Malhamdale cottage is centrally located in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park, with wonderful walks leading straight from the doorstep. Venture through Malham Tarn, along the shores of Malham Cove and discover Janet’s Foss, a spectacular waterfall. (NB: The drive is one vehicle wide with a drop to the river one side - thankfully we didn't meet anything coming the other way all week!) As other reviewers have pointed out it does get very hot thanks to the Aga, which apparently is left on 24/7 (unless we missed a trick there??), and we had to leave the kitchen door open a lot when downstairs, and couldn't really use the dining table (it's open plan for that bit!) - and this wasn't even a really hot week! I'm sure it's lovely and cosy in autumn or winter though!! We also discovered that the Aga also makes the utensils and plates a little too warm, and food kept in the cupboard doesn't do too well - I'd suggest the fridge for anything perishable, even cake! ;-) Anyone staying in the height of summer might want to pack a couple of desk fans for the bedrooms - we noticed comments in the visitor books from years ago suggesting they'd be a good addition, but we couldn't find any. A floor fan in the lounge would have helped a bit as well!! (Whether it was us older ladies just being a bit weedy or not, we both found the windows couldn't be opened very wide!) We did love it, but probably wouldn't book it in the hot season again! It was a bigger struggle to keep cool than we anticipated. There's a lovely walk to Malham right from the doorstep, though be warned - there's no shade along the route once past the buildings! I'm not sure we'd have made it in a heatwave!! But it's an easy stroll, mostly flat, no really difficult bits even if you have dodgy old knees and the stiles weren't too hard to get over.

Windows inside and out dirty. Chest of drawers in main bedroom dirty, would not put clothes in. No HD channels on TV. Aga needed a clean. A stable door would have been useful as kitchen gets hot.

It was very comfortable and the Aga and central heating kept it nice and warm so we didn't have to use the open fire. The kitchen was very well equipped and had all the necessary pans and utensils. The cottage was clean throughout, and the underfloor heating was appreciated in the bathroom.
