About this property

A delightful terraced cottage dating back to the 1700s, centrally situated in the pretty village of Ingleton. With the ability to accommodate up to seven adults and two children, this wonderful holiday home is made up of two parts, the main terraced cottage and a separate detached annexe, making it perfect for groups of friends and families wanting to give children their own space. Fully renovated by the owners, the two bedroom cottage is full of character and charm, with a great deal of care and attention having been paid to create a lovely home, very much in keeping with its long history. The comfortable, spacious sitting room has a cosy woodburner and a dining area, as well as exposed stone walls and ceiling beams. A lovely, wide window provides good views across to the church and down the valley towards the viaduct and the river. The kitchen also has a dining space and a hallway which leads to the courtyard and the annexe, while upstairs there are two spacious bedrooms and a bathroom with a freestanding bath, adding a little bit of luxury to your stay. The annexe is a stone-built building, providing ground floor accommodation in an open plan configuration, with two bedrooms separated by a half partition. These consist of a set of adult bunks in one half, plus a single bed with a pull-out stacker bed in the other. These two beds can be put together to make a double bed on request and there is also a sofa bed for flexible sleeping arrangements. The ideal retreat for a couple of friends or the kids, this extra space is like a little den all on its own. There is a small kitchen area offering the necessary facilities to make a cup of tea and light meals, plus a spacious wet room to ensure that guests have all they need during their stay. Outside, the courtyard sits between the main house and the annexe, providing a good place to sit and relax in the summer. There is a large, external utility room which can be used for storing bikes and hiking gear, plus the novelty of an outside WC, a real throwback to bygone years! The property is in the middle of the village on the quaint high street where you will find a local inn, shops and even a seasonal, open-air heated swimming pool! A short drive away, the bustling market town of Settle has an excellent array of pubs, restaurants and charming independent shops, plus the nearby Settle-Carlisle Railway is well worth a ride, winding its way through spectacular limestone scenery and over the Ribblehead Viaduct in the heart of the Three Peaks countryside. The cottage is ideal for those interested in outdoor pursuits and for groups looking to take on the challenge of the Three Peaks! It is ideally placed for hikers, cavers and cyclists, with numerous majestic caves and waterfalls in the vicinity. Morecambe Bay is just 20 miles away and a 30 minute drive finds you in the stunning Lake District, making the property a great base for exploring all that this fabulous region has to offer!

The attractive village of Ingleton is nestled beneath Ingleborough, one of the famous 'Three Peaks' on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Offering a wide range of shops, pubs and places to eat, the winding streets of this pretty village all converge on a central market place. A mile outside of Ingleton and down the Hawes road are the well known White Scar Caves. Open to the public, these caves display a huge number of caverns full of stalactites and stalagmites, with one cave home to a huge underground lake. The superb 'Falls Walk' offers an interesting circuit which takes in some of the impressive cascading waterfalls of the area whilst the proximity to both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake distract make this an excellent place for walkers.

One bed, in the annexe , had slats displaced but I now know that my son-in- law fixed that. Otherwise the property was clean, comfortable and ideal for our purpose. Daughter and son-in-law had their privacy in the annexe while ourselves and our son stayed in the main house. It all worked extremely well. A big thank you to the owners, Claire and Richard.

I booked Fountain House as it seemed to tick all the boxes for our group; my elderly mother was to be accommodated in the annexe as although she can walk, a flight of stairs is difficult for her to manage. My husband and I were to have the super king bed in the main house, with my friend sleeping in the king size room. We also had two further friends who would be staying just two nights in the adult bunks in the annexe. Upon arrival, the first thing that struck us was the lack of a welcome pack explaining wifi code, when bins are emptied, how to work facilities etc. Having stayed in many holiday rental cottages over the years, we've never encountered this before. Although we are fairly intelligent people and are able to figure most things out, it is helpful to have this information to hand. Secondly, we were disappointed with the overall lack of cleanliness in the property:- the inside of the fridge in the main house and the freezer in the annexe were both dirty. There were many cobwebs and dead flies - we appreciate that this is an old house, but it was supposed to have been cleaned on the day of our arrival. There was a thick layer of dust on every picture frame and lastly, when we went to use a frying pan, we found a crusting of mouldy food. All four of us have over the years worked as cleaners and although we understand that it is hard work, there is also a standard that should be maintained. The next problem we encountered was the beds. The single bed in the annexe is not suitable for an adult to sleep on, let alone an elderly one. The slats beneath kept falling out, meaning my mother had to move to the king size room in the main house with my friend kindly taking the sofa. The mattress on the top adult bunk bed is extremely thin meaning my friend (who luckily was only staying two nights) was unable to sleep - not helpful as we were hiking the Three Peaks. The super king bed is in fact two singles and a camp bed pushed together; these beds are of different heights and all had separate duvets. Also, once our weekend only friends had departed, our remaining sofa-sleeping friend was unable to occupy the bottom bunk in the annexe due to the carbon monoxide alarm continually beeping. Other niggles were:- it was annoying having just one set of keys - we as a group were coming and going at different times and it was a pain remembering to return the key to the key safe. Our friend telephoned the owner on the Saturday after an unfortunate incident when she became locked out. She was told that there were an additional set of keys in the other key safe but the code she was given was incorrect. Also, we were unable to get the boiler in the annexe to heat hot water (again, this is where a welcome pack would have been handy). Not a major problem as the bathroom in the main house is lovely, but a pain when you have four hot and dirty hikers wishing to take a shower! I truly hate having to write a review like this but I had been planning this trip for nearly a year to celebrate my 50th birthday with family and friends and feel a little let down. Fountain House is gorgeous and with some extra TLC would definitely be a 10/10 property.

There is plenty of space. The open fire was amazing. We had to purchase extra logs, although they were cheap enough from a nearby farm.
