About this property

One of the more unusual holiday cottages in Sussex! Superbly done and exceptionally well presented

This old Victorian pumping station fell redundant following the opening of the nearby Ardingly Resevoir in 1975. Prior to then it pumped drinking water to the properties at the very top of the village when water was piped to Turners Hill from Caterham to the north of the North Downs.

Converted by the current owners over the last ten years it has been very cleverly presented to provide rather different and exceptional accommodation that will sleep five guests. Pump House Lodge sits adjacent to the owners’ home yet offers complete privacy and wonderful views from the terrace over the rolling hills of the Sussex High Weald.

The living room and conservatory dining room provide a great space and the large comfortable sofas and armchairs enhance the feeling of real spaciousness on offer here. One of the three bedrooms is located on the ground floor and has a shower room right beside it. This double bedroom looks out onto the terrace and is a lovely private room. Upstairs there are two further bedrooms. The principal double bedroom is beautifully bright and from the roof windows has great views east over the hills. The single bedroom also shares those same views as does the upstairs family bathroom, a bathroom with a difference you might say! It is fitted with a bath and a separate power shower above.

Turners Hill and beyond

Pump House Lodge sits on the edge of the village of Turners Hill. From the front door there are public bridleways heading east that open up to offer views towards East Grinstead and beyond to the Ashdown Forest in the far distance.

Turners Hill has a wonderful mix of period properties and cottages. The village is set at one of the higher parts on the Sussex Weald and retains its local village store, a choice of village pubs and a village restaurant. It is a perfect location to sample what this part of Sussex has to offer.

The National Trust property at Standen is just five miles from Pump House Lodge. The Victorian house inspired by the architect Philip Webb and his friend William Morris is tucked away at the end of a quiet Sussex lane and offers stunning views over the High Weald towards the Weir Wood Resevoir. A visit here can easily keep you occupied for a day.

Now open through to East Grinstead, four miles to the east of Turners Hill, the Bluebell Railway has finally connected with the mainline rail service. It offers a restful trip through the heart of mid Sussex heading south through Horsted Keynes to Sheffield Park. Sheffield Park Gardens is an internationally renowned garden and parkland also owned by the National Trust. Other nearby attractions are Wakehurst Place, home to the Millennium Seed Bank, Nymans House and Gardens and High Beeches Garden. All are within a fifteen minute drive of Pump House Lodge.

It is always so nice to come and stay at the Pumphouse Lodge. Not only is nice and light, spacious and clean, the location is just so beautiful too. All in all we were super happy staying at the Pumphouse Lodge again and we will definitely consider it for the future again as well.
