About this property

A great cottage setting to visit the Sussex High Weald and a great spot for the Bluebell Railway

A traditional and comfortable ground floor cottage, that is perfectly placed for the many visitor attractions located in the north of Sussex, such as the Bluebell Railway, Standen, Wakehurst Place and the Ashdown Forest. High Weald Cottage is in the grounds of the owners’ home, yet enjoys its own private garden with access onto the paddock beyond. The gardens and paddock offer a display of colour throughout the season.

The cottage is situated in a beautiful rural area to the south of East Grinstead, yet is only a mile from the centre of the town. It is a two bedroom cottage that will sleep between three and four. The second bedroom is available with a single bed however it will open out to make an exceptionally comfortable full double. Although it does makes the room a little tight it is easily do-able. The principal bedroom has twin beds.

The cottage is comprehensively equipped, as you would expect with any home. It has a large and separate living room that faces south, with gas fire and plenty of books making it feel very homely. The kitchen and dining room are also of very good size allowing plenty of room for four to dine in comfort. There is just the single bathroom, recently fully refurbished which has both bath and a shower with shower screen. The garden space is large and private and is a wonderful feature of this property.

East Grinstead and beyond

A mile away is the market town of East Grinstead with its traditional wide street and shops that have been very much retained at the southern end of the town.

This area of Sussex offers excellent access to many well known visitor attractions. The National Trust property at Standen is within a mile of High Weald Cottage The Victorian house inspired by the architect Philip Webb and his friend William Morris is tucked away at the end of a quiet Sussex lane and offers stunning views over the High Weald towards the Weir Wood Reservoir. A visit here can easily keep you occupied for a day.

Now open to East Grinstead, the Bluebell Railway passes within a mile of the cottage and steam trains can be heard from the nearby Imberhorne cutting! Take the railway south through Kingscote and Horsted Keynes to Sheffield Park, and visit Sheffield Park Gardens, an internationally renowned garden and parkland also owned by the National Trust.

Other nearby attractions are Wakehurst Place, home to the Millennium Seed Bank, Nymans House and Gardens, and High Beeches. All are within a twenty minute drive of High Weald Cottage.

Three miles south east is the beautiful Sussex village of Forest Row, and south from there the Ashdown Forest and the many walks that the Forest provides. This is just a flavour of the area. Take a look on our homepage under ‘Places to visit’ for full details on all the attractions.

The house was perfect for my husband and I travelling with my mother. With separate kitchen/dining and lounge areas there was plenty of room to get privacy and on a couple of occasions we entertained friends of my mothers which was lovely - this just would not have been possible in a "hotel" or a bed and breakfast type situation. There were a great supply of novels and non fiction books along with a wonderfully prepared book of local attractions etc. Lots to enjoy and explore within just a few minutes of the accommodation. Free WiFi was a great bonus.

The cottage was comfortable and the owners friendly, welcoming and helpful. Thank you for making us feel so welcome. Peaceful surroundings, yet not isolated and close to all needed amenities. We would certainly recommend this cottage.
