This traditional cottage for five in picturesque Nutbourne has a vineyard next door! and is only a short distance from the South Downs
The lane to Lower Jordans is a typical narrow English country lane, with trees meeting overhead, and high banks on either side. The cottage, when you reach it, will not disappoint. It has stood for many hundreds of years, yet has everything you need to combine tradition with modern comfort. Downstairs the highlight is the garden room with windows along three sides, and a partially glazed roof. Even when indoors you will feel connected with the beautiful gardens surrounding the cottage, especially when you throw open the French windows. Next to the garden room is a comfortable sitting room, with an open fire to add to the period ambience and cosy feel of this lovely room. The latest 21st Century technology has not been forgotten either, with a flat screen TV with satellite connection and DVD, and a Hi-Fi system. The large dining hall in the centre of the cottage also has an open fire so you will be spoilt for choice as to which one to light!. Both fireplaces are very old, with bread ovens and other period features dating back to when cottages did not have separate kitchens. Fear not, the kitchen here is fully equipped. There is a two oven Aga keeping the kitchen warm all year round, and in the adjacent utility room there is also a conventional electric oven and four ring hob.
Upstairs the bedrooms continue the traditional feel, with pretty casement windows giving views in different directions over the gardens surrounding Lower Jordans. The two bedrooms on the first floor have king sized beds, and the principal bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, with large bath, basin and WC. There is also a family bathroom on this floor, with a bath, separate shower cubicle, basin and WC. On the second floor there is a landing area with its own TV and satellite connection, with a single bedroom under the eaves of the roof.
There is ample parking space on the gravel drive inside the five bar gate, and the gardens open up from there. The gardens are a real feature of Lower Jordans. A path runs along the front of the house, with a wide border of shrubs, small trees and herbaceous perennials. As you reach the end of the house there is a water garden with several ponds at different levels and the sound of water flowing from one to the other. The presence of these unfenced ponds makes the house unsuitable for very young children. The back of the cottage has a wide lawn and terrace for outside meals, the perfect place for a summer's evening barbecue. Going up from here is a large fruit and vegetable garden, tended by the owner and another area of lawn and flower borders. All in all a lovely garden in which to relax and enjoy the peace of the countryside.
Nutbourne and beyond
The South Downs National Park lies just to the south of Lower Jordans on the edge of Nutbourne where it incorporates the Pulborough Brooks. The Pulborough Brooks is in fact a deliberate flood plain, so periodically it becomes a spectacular lake totally transforming the landscape. There are many excellent walks across the Brooks and along the banks of the River Arun offering uninterrupted views south towards the South Downs. Two miles from Lower Jordans at Wiggonholt near Pulborough is the rspb Pulborough Brooks reserve. This is a wetland haven for bird life, and an overwintering ground for many migrant species. We carry a link to the rspb reserve within ‘Places to visit’ on our website.
Also nearby are the West Chiltington and West Sussex Golf Clubs. The latter is regularly judged one of the outstanding inland courses in Britain with ‘a priceless oasis of heather, sand, heath and trees beneath the Sussex Downs’. For any golf lover, staying at Lower Jordans is very convenient indeed.
Four miles south east in the direction of Storrington and nestling at the foot of the South Downs is Parham House, a magnificent Elizabethan home that is a real jewel. Again it is featured under ‘Places to visit’ - a half day there is time well spent.
Heading northwest from Pulborough is the historic market town of Petworth. It is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The house and its grounds are now owned by the National Trust. The magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner. Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings. The town is full of quaint houses and cottages, many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following a visit to Petworth House and Park.
This area of West Sussex has a variety of events that occur through the year from Goodwood racing and the Goodwood motorsport meetings, to the Arundel Festival, racing at Fontwell and polo at Cowdray. Details on all of these are found under our ‘What’s on’ heading.
