About this property

Traditional holiday cottage for two in the heart of the popular Downland town of Steyning

Steyning is one of a number of really picturesque small settlements at the foot of the South Downs. It has a particular charm popular with many, and Mill Cottage is right in the heart of this fascinating small market town.

Mill Cottage is a perfect little hideaway cottage for two, tucked away down a pathway behind a row of 18th and 19th Century cottages. It is the middle cottage in a group of three quaint attached cottages, and retains an old world charm with totally up to date facilities for the modern holiday maker. You enter the sitting room to find the original tiled floor is still there, and there are beams overhead. There is a fireplace containing an electric woodburning stove, ideal for chilly evenings, and comfortable seating for a relaxing evening in. Modern technology has not been forgotten, and there is a radio and flat screen TV to keep you entertained.

The kitchen beyond the sitting room has been cleverly fitted to make use of the space, with a full sized built in oven and two ring hob. In addition there is a microwave, but you may choose to eat out in one of the many restaurants and pubs in Steyning, which offer a range of eating opportunities at all times of the day. The back door from the kitchen leads outside to a path running behind the neighbouring cottage and leading to Mill Cottage's private garden, a sheltered sun trap in which to enjoy a relaxing cup of tea or glass of wine as your mood dictates.

From the kitchen, stairs lead up to the bedroom and spacious shower room. The stairs are quite steep so typical of a cottage of this size and period. The bedroom has a Victorian style double bed and traditional cottage style furniture to complement the room. It will be a very cosy room in which to spend the night. The shower room next to the bedroom has been cleverly fitted to allow inclusion of a washing machine without compromising the space and comfort of the room. There is a very large shower with a ceiling fitted shower head, as well as a basin and WC. The white wall tiles and contrasting black and white flooring give the room a very smart appearance.

Steyning and beyond

Steyning is a vibrant small town that is well preserved. It is full of narrow streets with many timber framed Tudor style buildings as well as some fine Georgian townhouses. It only has the one main shopping street, the High Street which retains many small interesting and attractive independent shops which is quite rare in today’s modern society, so it makes Steyning an interesting town to browse.

The Norman church contains some of the best Romanesque architecture in England; have a look in Steyning Museum next to the library, it tells the story of the area from prehistory to the present day.

Steyning’s immediate neighbour is the small village of Bramber. It has remained largely unchanged over the centuries and is overlooked by the remains of the castle built after the Norman Conquest and now looked after by English Heritage. Also in Bramber, St Mary’s House is a magnificent late medieval house and has interesting connections - King Charles II hid there on his escape to France and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle chose the house as a setting for one of the Sherlock Holmes stories. It is well worth visiting and we have information on St Mary’s on our website link ‘Places to visit’.

Just west of Steyning is the famous landmark of Chanctonbury Ring on the South Downs. It is a three mile walk picking up the South Downs Way from the Roundhill above the town. Chanctonbury Ring was originally an Iron Age hill fort and following that a Roman temple was located there. It is most famous though for the ring of beech trees planted in 1760 by Charles Goring. The great storm of 1987 ripped through the Ring and, following a second storm in 1990 the Goring family replanted the trees and today Chanctonbury Ring is regaining its former glory. At 238 metres there are fine Downland views in each direction. Walk south from Chanctonbury and you reach Cissbury Ring another Iron Age hill fort. It is a picturesque walk and a great introduction to the chalk Downland of Sussex.

The cottage is quaint, but has everything you need. Shower room excellent, bed very comfortable. Ideally located near to Steyning high street and the lovely shops, cafes and restaurants.

We had a very relaxing time at your lovely quaint cottage. We especially appreciated the wonderful power shower and warm tiles in the bathroom and the comfortable bed. I would highly recommend your cottage to my family and friends.

This is a very pleasant cottage in a lovely location which is particularly good for those with dogs as there are so many really good dog walks very close to the cottage which are accessible on foot. Steyning is a proper village with all the shops that you need within walking distance on the High Street. The Co-Op supermarket is particularly well stocked for groceries and there are several places where you can buy fresh, proper bread. We had an extremely pleasant week there.
