Shipley and beyond

The village of Shipley is set within the parish of Horsham and was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Sepelei'. It is home to St Mary the Virgin church which was built in c1125 by the Order of the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, better known as the Knights Templar. Shipley itself is home to King's Mill (also known as Shipley Windmill) which was the setting for the beloved television programme Jonathan Creek. You can catch a glimpse of this beautiful building, built in 1879, from an adjacent public footpath. Shipley Windmill is an eight-sided smock mill, so-called because she is supposed to look like the old-fashioned farm labourer's smock.

Bryants Platt Cottage is very centrally situated to enjoy a lot of Sussex. The South Downs National Park is within easy reach and the popular vantage points of Chanctonbury and Cissbury Ring are due south from the cottage. They are both Iron Age hill forts although Chanctonbury Ring is the more famous of the two because of its ring of beech trees originally planted in 1760. To walk between the two rings is a distance of about three miles providing wonderful views over the Downs and out to sea while on clear days Chichester and the Isle of Wight are easily visible from Cissbury Ring.

For keen walkers, there are also options at rspb Pulborough Brooks which is just a 15 minute drive away from the cottage. There are many excellent walks across the Brooks and along the banks of the River Arun offering uninterrupted views south towards the South Downs. Part of the Brooks contains one of the rspb’s major reserves in the south.

Heading north the traditional market town of Horsham has good shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. It has retained much of its heritage with fine architecture on view, in particular along the Causeway which is lined with medieval homes that lead to the parish church of St Mary's. The Carfax is at the very heart of the town with open air cafes, bandstand music and street markets. The Saturday market features a large variety of stalls across the town and is worth calling in to see.

Bryants Platt Cottage is also well positioned to visit National Trust properties such as Nymans House which is comfortably within a half hours drive. Nymans is an outstanding 20th Century garden set around a romantic house and ruins in beautiful woodland. Theatrically designed with plants from around the world Nymans is internationally renowned for its garden design, rare plant collection and intimacy. Visit the Messel family rooms in the house and see the dramatic ruins that form a magnificent backdrop to the main lawns.

Also within driving distance is Parham House, a magnificent Elizabethan country house with beautiful formal gardens and open parkland. During the year Parham hosts a number of popular house and garden weekends.
