About this property

Stay in a truly impressive holiday cottage in a most traditional setting opposite St Mary's Church, Pulborough

This 17th Century detached cottage has just undergone a complete restoration and offers superior accommodation for up to six guests.

Ivy Cottage is situated opposite the Parish Church of St Mary’s that dates from the 12th Century, and is in one of the prettiest areas of Pulborough.

The cottage offers a large reception space with a central living area, open fireplace and a separate snug television room. At the rear of the cottage overlooking the private garden is a bespoke traditional wooden conservatory that makes a tremendous social space and an ideal room for dining throughout the year. From there it links round to a comprehensively equipped kitchen, larder and utility room. There are three upstairs double bedrooms, the two bedrooms that overlook the church are both fitted with double beds while the third bedroom with twin beds overlooks the garden. Upstairs there is a luxurious shower room, while below on the ground floor is a good sized family bathroom with a rolled top bath.

Since a cottage of this age has sloping floors and walls that are not straight, we believe you will really enjoy the character of this cottage.

Pulborough and beyond

The South Downs National Park falls right on the boundary of Pulborough where it incorporates the Pulborough Brooks. The Pulborough Brooks is in fact a deliberate flood plain, so periodically it becomes a spectacular lake totally transforming the landscape. There are many excellent walks across the Brooks and along the banks of the River Arun offering uninterrupted views south towards the South Downs. Part of the Brooks contains one of the rspb’s major reserves in the south and just two miles from the house. We carry a link to the rspb reserve within ‘Places to visit’ on our website. Equally there are picturesque walks west from the cottage to meet the river again at Stopham where the popular White Hart pub and restaurant beside the old road bridge makes for a popular destination.

Also nearby is the West Sussex Golf Club which is regularly judged one of the outstanding inland courses in Britain with ‘a priceless oasis of heather, sand, heath and trees beneath the Sussex Downs’. For any golf lover, staying at Ivy Cottage is very convenient indeed.

Four miles south east in the direction of Storrington and nestling at the foot of the South Downs is Parham House, a magnificent Elizabethan home that is a real jewel. Again it is featured under ‘Places to visit’ — a half day there is time well spent.

Heading northwest from Pulborough is the historic market town of Petworth. It is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The house and its grounds are now owned by the National Trust. The magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner. Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings. The town is full of quaint houses and cottages, many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following a visit to Petworth House and Park.

This area of West Sussex has a variety of events that occur through the year from Goodwood racing and the Goodwood motorsport meetings, to the Arundel Festival, racing at Fontwell and polo at Cowdray. Details on all of these are found under our ‘What’s on’ heading.

A beautifully and tastefully renovated cottage with excellent facilities. As soon as we saw the vase of fresh flowers on the table to welcome us we felt at home and knew we were going to enjoy our stay. Stepping out of the conservatory we found ourselves in a delightful cottage garden, absolutely packed with summer flowers and shrubs which made sitting out at the garden table an absolute joy. The accommodation was excellent with lots of room for everyone. It was spotlessly clean and we really appreciated the "starter pack" of milk, tea and coffee (plus eggs) that were in the cottage to welcome us - everybody wants to put the kettle on as soon as they arrive at their destination. We were made to feel most welcome by the owner of the cottage (who also kindly filled us in with a bit of its history) and we would most certainly recommend Ivy Cottage to anyone looking for a comfortable holiday home with lots of character.

The standard of furnishings and the level of equipment at Ivy Cottage were exceptional. The owner did her utmost to ensure that we were comfortable on arrival but combined her consideration with respect for our privacy during our stay.
