Lower Beeding and beyond

This is a beautiful area in the heart of Sussex. There are uninterrupted views south from the grounds of the hotel towards the South Downs. Devil's Dyke in fact is little more than eight miles to the south via the picturesque small market town of Henfield.

To walk or cycle south along The Downs Link path from the old railway station at West Grinstead towards Henfield is a delight and you are soon enjoying beautiful views of the Downs as you head south.

Four miles to the north of Bothy Cottage, Horsham is a fine historic market town which features four historic areas, Bishopric, Carfax, Causeway and Normandy — names believed to be almost unique to the town. The Causeway is a tree lined avenue with medieval and period properties that leads down to the parish church of St Mary’s and Normandy, a quiet area found beside the church while the Carfax, originally a meeting of four ways, is now a relaxing place to stop and enjoy a coffee.

To the south east of the town and surrounding the Mannings Heath Golf Club, St Leonard's Forest is the most westerly remaining of the large forests which once formed a continuous tract across the central Wealden ridge of Sussex. Iron smelting was carried out in the Weald, and Sussex had the ingredients required — easily obtainable iron ore, timber and water. Known as ’hammer ponds’ these ponds can be seen around Mannings Heath and nearby Bucks Head. Today they appear as picturesque lakes within a wooded setting while the forest is now a patchwork of woodlands and heath covering 12 square miles affording many excellent walking opportunities.

Both Nymans Gardens and High Beeches Garden, two great gardens in the Sussex High Weald are within a ten minute drive and display a variety of colour and texture along with outstanding views to the south.
