A perfect holiday retreat in deepest Sussex yet ideally placed for touring this beautiful county
Over 150 years ago The Potting Shed was central to a 27 acre orchard located on the south facing slopes in the tiny hamlet of Little Bognor next to Fittleworth that look straight to the South Downs. For it was here that workers gathered to collect their wages from a downstairs office that is now the main bedroom in this beautiful cottage.
Today it is a most charming oak clad and stone two bedroom detached holiday cottage within the South Downs National Park. The cottage shares the grounds of the owners’ home and is laid out with the living room and kitchen area on the ground floor and the two bedrooms and bathroom below. Double doors from the living room open onto the outside terrace which gives the cottage much natural light. A feature woodburning stove which although gas gives a focus to the room and a cosy warm glow in winter.
The cottage is very comfortable and comprehensively equipped. The kitchen and dining area is also bright and spacious and sits at a slightly raised level to the main living room. The main bedroom below is fitted with a king sized bed while the second bedroom is fitted with three foot bunk beds. Since this room is smaller there is the option of using a sofa bed in the living room should flexibility of accommodation be needed. There is an additional charge for use of linen when the sofa bed is required. The main bathroom is fitted with a bath and shower attachment above and there is also a cloakroom on the main floor.
For the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival Meeting secure parking can be offered for anyone bringing a classic car.
Fittleworth and beyond
Little Bognor is a tiny hamlet that enjoys peace and seclusion yet is perfectly located to explore this beautiful area within the South Downs National Park. Consisting of just a few houses an old mill and a letterbox! there are outstanding views towards the South Downs and every opportunity to enjoy lovely walks from the doorstep.
Three miles away the Pulborough Brooks fall on the boundary of the Park and incorporate the River Arun flood plain. It is in fact a deliberate flood plain, so periodically it becomes a spectacular lake totally transforming the landscape. There are many excellent walks across the Brooks and along the banks of the River Arun offering uninterrupted views south towards the South Downs. Part of the Brooks contains one of the rspb’s major reserves in the south and just five miles from the cottage. We carry a link to the rspb reserve within ‘Places to visit’ on our website.
Also nearby is the West Sussex Golf Club which is regularly judged one of the outstanding inland courses in Britain. It is five miles from the Potting Shed so for the keen golfer is very convenient indeed.
Six miles south east in the direction of Storrington and nestling at the foot of the South Downs is Parham House, a magnificent Elizabethan home that is a real jewel. Again it is featured under ‘Places to visit’ - a half day there is time well spent.
A short distance west from Little Bognor is the historic market town of Petworth. It is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The house and its grounds are now owned by the National Trust. The magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner. Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings. The town is full of quaint houses and cottages, many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following a visit to Petworth House and Park.
This area of West Sussex has a variety of events that occur through the year from Goodwood racing and the Goodwood motorsport meetings, to the Petworth Festival, racing at Fontwell and polo at Cowdray. Details on all of these are found under our ‘What’s on’ heading.

Love "the potting shed" Nigel and Diana are just amazing hosts. It was a home away from home and had all the extra touches to make us feel so welcome.

The Potting Shed was a perfectly wonderful, peaceful retreat from our very busy and rather stressful lives. Light, airy, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The birdsong was magnificent!!!!! and so were the walks. WE LOVED IT ALL.
