About this property

Pretty thatched West Sussex holiday cottage on the edge of a private estate, close to the beach

South Cottage is a light and spacious two bedroomed cottage built in the 1930s, and just a five minute stroll from the beach. It retains many features from the period in which it was built, including oak planked doors with wooden latches, and lovely brick fireplaces. It has all the comforts of the 21st Century though, with cosy central heating and a newly fitted kitchen and bathroom. The fireplaces have electric fires as open fires are not permitted due to the risk to the thatch.

Downstairs the cottage has a bright and spacious sitting room, with a bay window looking south over the garden. The fireplace has an electric coal effect heater, which makes the room feel very comfortable on chilly evenings. Next to the sitting room is a dining room, which also faces south and leads into a multi sided conservatory. This has concertina roof blinds which help to keep it cool in the summer, and there are doors opening onto the garden, and windows in each side should you need to increase the air flow.

Across the hall from the sitting room is a kitchen breakfast room with a large pine table and chairs. The kitchen has a built in halogen hob with oven below, and a dishwasher, so there is no need to spend too much time at the sink whilst on holiday. Beyond the kitchen is a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer, and a small study with a desk the perfect size for a laptop. Completing the downstairs accommodation is a cloakroom.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The principal bedroom has a king sized double bed and charming sloping ceilings. The second bedroom has twin beds and a fireplace dating from the time the cottage was built. Again as open fires are not permitted there is an electric fire, this time in the style of a woodburning stove. The bathroom has a bath with shower over it, along with a basin and WC, and there is a large heated towel rail to ensure that the bath towels will be lovely and warm when you need them.

The cottage has garden all around it, which has been planted for colour in the summer and to create a relaxing space to enjoy during your holiday. Gardeners come in regularly during the summer to keep it looking its best. Barbecues are unfortunately not permitted owing to the risk to the thatch from sparks, but it would make a wonderful picnic spot. There is also plenty of space for two cars to park in the driveway, and a garage which would take one car or provide secure storage for bicycles if you have brought some with you.

Aldwick and beyond

Aldwick is a village between Bognor Regis and Pagham. It offers a relaxed setting which appears caught in a peaceful time capsule between the bustle of Bognor Regis two miles to the east and the utter tranquillity of Pagham and Pagham Harbour a mile or two to the west. This part of the coastline is a haven for unusual birds and wildlife with Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve and Chichester Harbour a little further to the west both being areas of outstanding natural beauty. Pagham Harbour is an internationally important site for nature conservation while Chichester Harbour also combines its wildlife attractions with sailing centres such as Itchenor, Bosham, Dell Quay and Emsworth. Between these harbours there are beaches at Selsey and the Witterings, the latter offering unrivalled views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

Chichester, the cathedral city of Sussex, is no more than five miles away. It has played a key role in the affairs of Sussex since at least Roman times. The city has broad streets that are packed with listed buildings headed by the towering presence of the cathedral.

The city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient city walls, which helps to make Chichester compact and pleasant to explore on foot. It is a cosmopolitan, vibrant and friendly city proudly combining two thousand years of heritage with a lively lifestyle. A trip to the Chichester Festival Theatre close to the centre is worth considering since it is famous for the quality of theatre production many of which premiere here before moving on to the London theatre scene. For the film buff the cinema complex and nearby restaurants to the south of the city also make for an enjoyable evening out.

There is always much to see and do in Sussex and staying on the coast gives the best of both; beaches close by and an easy springboard back inland to explore the South Downs a great area to walk.

Felt at home immediately. After a long journey the extra touches like milk, butter and orange juice in the fridge, croissants on the table, and coffee and tea available were most welcome and much appreciated. The cottage was cosy, comfortable and clean and well positioned for exploring the area.
