Regency House is a beautiful example of Regency town house in the centre of the pictureseque town of Arundel, and within a short walk of the iconic castle and the cathedral. It is the perfect house for a gathering of an extended family, or a group of friends looking for a sophisticated and elegant get together. The living space on the ground floor is complemented by five luxurious bedrooms on the upper two floors.

The front door opens into a spacious entrance hall, with views through the house to the dining room at the back. As you pass through the hall you reach the wide, easy rising staircase in the middle of the house. The elegant drawing room is to your left, with a wide bow window overlooking the pavement and Maltravers Street outside. For cosy evenings at home there are working shutters on the window, so winter evenings could be spent with the fire lit and the shutters closed to enjoy the warm period ambiance. If period ambiance isn't your thing, then the sophisticated television, Blu-Ray player and sound system will bring you right up to date.

To the rear of the house is the modern, well fitted kitchen. The large range style cooker has two ovens and plenty of hob space for cooking up a real feast. The adjacent dining room will comfortably seat the whole party and is furnished with an appropriately large antique table and chairs. The paintings on the wall have a Napoleonic theme, in keeping with the age of the house, although the Prince Regent may not have entirely approved.

On the lower ground floor the former servants' accommodation has been retained remarkably intact. In many houses of this period this floor has been converted into a self contained flat, but here you have the full use of it. The former Butler's pantry has an old safe still in the wall, and for the benefit of the 21st Century inhabitants there is a table football table, just the thing for a little interguest rivalry on a wet afternoon perhaps. Also on this floor is the former kitchen, now functioning as a laundry room. The former wine cellar is still down on this level too, but alas all of the wine has long gone. There is one final room with a computer game system for those who find the table football too challenging.

On the first floor there are three glorious double bedrooms. The principal bedroom at the front of the house has an ensuite bathroom and a separate dressing area with more wardrobes than you will probably need whilst on holiday. Overlooking the garden at the rear of this floor are two more very comfortable and spacious bedrooms. One has an ensuite shower room and a large built in closet. Also on this floor is a separate cloakroom and family bathroom with modern bath and shower attachment.

Ascending the stairs to the top floor, brings you to the last two bedrooms. These will each sleep three people, as they both contain a double bed and a separate single bed. For that reason they are probably best suited to family use. They both have charming views over the surrounding rooftops, one taking in glimpses of the castle, and the other looking south towards the coast.

Back downstairs again, from the kitchen a door leads to the period conservatory beyond which lies a beautifully planted garden on several levels with a large terrace at the upper level. Ascending the steps through the lush almost Mediterranean planting of the garden you could almost imagine being in the South of France, and the terrace at the top of the garden is a fantastic sun trap. From this terrace there are views over tree tops towards the castle, and back towards the upper windows of Regency House itself. The terrace has a large table and plenty of chairs, along with a barbecue to allow alfresco dining and perhaps a relaxing glass of wine or two.

Arundel and beyond

Arundel is an historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as a wide range of restaurants and tearooms. It’s a great place to wander and just enjoy its hospitality.

Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years, so early inhabitants of Regency House may have known it. It is one of the great treasure houses of England and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the Keep, which dates from the 11th century, to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs is definitely worth the effort.

Beyond the castle grounds Arundel Park extends north towards the Downs offering many fine walks. A two mile walk to the top affords fantastic downland views and south to the coast.

The River Arun winds its way around the town and is a magnet for wildlife. With more than 60 acres of ponds, lakes and reed beds, Arundel Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust attracts some of the worlds most spectacular ducks, geese and swans. The best way to enjoy the river is on a river cruise stopping off at the Black Rabbit pub or proceeding further north where the river hugs the scarp wooded slope at the foot of the Downs before reaching Amberley.

If you plan to head further afield Arundel is well placed for the coast. Climping Beach and Littlehampton’s West Beach are only a short drive away. This is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest and at the eastern end beside the mouth of the River Arun is the West Beach Café built by local craftsmen using materials sourced locally. It is worth a visit, the fish and chips come highly recommended!

Goodwood and Fontwell racecourses are nearby. So is the cathedral city of Chichester with its excellent Festival Theatre noted for not only the quality of productions but also the fact many world premieres are featured as well.

If you fancy a day in the city, Arundel mainline station is on a direct route to London so why not mix the cosmopolitan capital with this beautiful part of Sussex?
