With a history dating back to Tudor times, Burford's Old Bakery really is an old house. Thankfully, however, a rather swish make over in recent times has turned this classic Cotswolds stone building into a rather gorgeous retreat in the heart of Burford. Records suggest that the famous Banbury Cake recipe made its first appearance from this very building, and given that the current owners are locally renowned bakers, they felt it only right to supply a couple of cakes for guests to enjoy on arrival! Situated (literally) 12 seconds walk from the High Street, the property is a comfortable holiday home, located on the first floor (normal, easy to climb stairs) of a venerable old building. Inside The Old Bakery is elegant, even understated, and charming making it a romantic place to retreat to the large master bedroom looks towards Burford church in the distance, whilst a swanky bathroom is restful as it is smart. If you're bringing friends or children the second bedroom is a welcome addition.Whether you're planning to park and do nothing except eat out in Burford, or you're going to get out and tour the wonders of the Cotswolds, this little bolt hole is a great choice. Delightful. Please note that the bakery is no longer located on site, so you will not be disturbed early morning!!
Burford is possibly one of, if not the most famous of the Cotswolds locations. With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, Burford is justifiably one of the most picturesque towns in England. Often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds, the town was originally a fortified Anglo-Saxon ford which later grew to be an important regional crossroads and wealthy wool town. The 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past. The church is stunning, a real gem architecturally with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford's great families.
