About this property

Hidden along a footpath in Wallingford, the large black door to this detached cottage gives no idea to the passer-by of what delights await guests behind it. Stepping into this spacious holiday home the first thing that greets you is the welcoming feeling. Large and comfortable, this self-catering cottage offers families and couples the perfect spot to take a weekend break or a long relaxing holiday. With four bedrooms, three with views across the river to the rural landscape beyond of the Chiltern Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the king-size double with patio doors to the raised terrace and the large wrap around sitting room, this is an ideal holiday hotspot. If you are lucky enough to be celebrating a special event or birthday while staying at the cottage, the dining room is perfect for entertaining and seats all guests admirably. The well-equipped and fitted kitchen is what would be expected in a beautiful riverside home with double doors to close it off from the rest of the living area. But the real star of this vacation is the garden with a river mooring. Cascading lawns run down to meet the decking where you can watch passing boats and cheer on the rowers as they cut through the water or even hire a boat for the day. Why not take a book and a cool drink and settle down to enjoy the tranquillity of the local birdsong, the sound of the river and the bells of the neighbouring St Leonards Church? Take a stroll through the quaint lanes of Wallingford and explore this quintessential English town with its tea rooms and local shops, pubs and restaurants. Why not look up what is showing at the theatre which is located in the town square? And if you think you may have seen this square before your visit and you are a fan of Midsomer Murders, then you have, Wallingford is the original Causton. But its link to detectives goes back further than Midsomer Murders, Wallingford was the home, until her death in 1976, of Agatha Christie and she is buried nearby in Cholsey. Further afield you have the delights of Henley-on-Thames with its annual Regatta, or Oxford with its long history and dreaming spires. But whatever you decide to do on this holiday, or the next, the welcome of Ninea awaits your return.

Wallingford has a history dating back to King Alfred and it was at Wallingford that William the Conqueror crossed the Thames with his army, before marching on London. Wallingford Castle was built at his command to cement it's royal importance, and during its lifetime has played host to many royal visitors including King John, Henry Vl and Edward the Black Prince, to name but a few. Unfortunately, what remains of it now is only impressive earth works but some of the stones were re-used to build the St Mary-le-More Church which can be found near the centre of the town.

The garden being right on the Thames was a really relaxing place to be, and even when indoors the garden and river were still in full view courtesy of big patio doors. We saw a kingfisher, a heron, bats and lots of rowers on the river. The house was well equipped and had comfortable beds and furniture. There were a couple of minor issues which didn't spoil our stay but are worth noting. The parking space for two cars next to the house is good because there is no on road parking nearby, but although it is like a garage in that it has walls and a door, it doesn't have a roof. Above the 'garage' is a massive tree which birds roost in and our two cars were covered in bird poo after a couple of days. I mean multiple poo on every panel of my car, not just one or two splats (I have photos) If it was possible even to stretch a tarpaulin sheet over the top that would likely do the trick. Another minor thing was that some of the drawers and handles perhaps need renewing. For example, the handle on the back door which leads to the parking space is pretty loose inside and out. Just fitting a replacement handle would solve that issue, so a simple fix. Finally we noticed that the skylights in the bathrooms seemed really grubby, particularly around the edges. Something like that wouldn't need cleaning every week, but doing it a couple of times a year would probably make a big difference. But just to repeat, we had a lovely stay and enjoyed our week in Wallingford and anyone who stays in Ninea will enjoy themselves.
