About this property

A delightful traditional slate cottage in an unmatchable location!

William Wordsworth's favourite village and home for many years, you are in the true heart of the Lake District in pretty Grasmere. Sleek contemporary finishings and truly remarkable views make Fairfield Cottage a choice that will surely pay for itself in magical memories.

You might well choose just to sit on the patio and watch the clouds sail by over Silver How and Stone Arthur, and if so your holiday will be well spent! Fairfield Cottage makes the most of its enviable position on the western slopes of Grasmere Vale, and the Juliet balcony in the master bedroom lets you look out over misty pastures in the morning to the picture-postcard hills beyond.

It goes without saying that you are in premium walking territory here. The central Lakeland fells wrap themselves around you, and walking routes are easy to find from your doorstep. Helm Crag, locally known as the Lion and the Lamb, looms appealingly above the village, and Fairfield Horseshoe, from which your cottage takes its name, is right behind you.

Grasmere is rich in history, and you will certainly want to visit Dove Cottage, Wordsworth's primary residence here, and his grave at the rustic St. Oswald's church, not to mention the many art galleries that dot the streets. The welcoming pubs, restaurants and tearooms of the little village will keep you well fed and watered, and there is so much to do during your holiday, with busy Ambleside just a few miles away and Keswick a short drive to the north.

Your cottage is beautifully presented, with spacious bedrooms full of natural light, and living areas designed for comfortable and social living. It is the ideal place to spend time with family or close friends, and we know that you really won't want to leave at the end of your stay.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

Perfect for a family or group of friends. Loved the ensuites and separate bathroom. Very comfy beds. Lovely peaceful location , gorgeous views .

We were very comfortable and warm. And reasonably well equipped. The negatives are :- The downstairs toilet door wouldn't close due to the lock being broken. No hand-wash in any of the bathrooms, most unhygienic. No washing up liquid. These are small things that give the impression of miserlyness.

Clean and spacious and warm and cosy.Always a pleasure to return there after days out walking or site seeing. Cottage was very well equipped and we missed nothing at all! The Christmas hamper left for us by the owner was a lovely surprise. Thank you! We are definitely considering a Spring or Summer break there in the near future!
