As the name suggests, Drovers Cottage was formerly a place of rest for drovers (modern day livestock transporters), who travelled hundreds and hundreds of miles with their animals and needed somewhere to rest. The group of fir trees, which still remain to this day, were an easily recognisable landmark even from afar. The fields surrounding the cottage are of archaeological interest, as they were used as Roman camps and often oyster shells can be found, these were brought in barrels from the coast for the Roman warriors to eat, and they tossed the shells into the fields.
Having been totally renovated, Drovers Cottage offers tasteful and well-presented accommodation, and is within easy walking distance to the quaint thatched-roof village, with its shop, beautiful church and two pubs serving good food. This picturesque village is steeped in history, it has a bronze burial in the parish, which dates back to 2000BC. The village was part of the Royal Manor, belonging first to King Alfred the Great, then later William the Conqueror, which is recorded in the Domesday Book.
Within easy reach are the South Downs, Portsmouth, Winchester Cathedral, Southampton with its maritime history, the New Forest, Chichester, beaches at the Witterings or Hayling Island, the Watercress steam train, Jane Austen’s house, Gilbert White’s house and Birdworld. London is just an hour by train from nearby Petersfield. Seasonal fishing available in a small lake close by. Shops ¼ mile.

"This cottage was in an amazing setting, so quiet and peaceful. We did not want to leave. We did lots of walks directly from the cottage using our ordnance survey map. Good that it was dog friendly so can recommend to others with dogs. The cleanliness was excellent and made us feel safe during pandemic. Excellent WiFi. Owner came and introduced herself which was a lovely touch. All the facilities you require, it was like home from home. Used outside seating a lot which was very relaxing. 10 minute walk across fields to village where we visited one pub, Isaak Walton, and had a drink outside which was very friendly and Covid safe. Did not visit olde George inn as didn’t seem very inviting. We really lived drovers cottage and would highly recommend it."

"A beautiful destination if you want to escape to quiet retreat. Comfortable and welcoming, we just keep coming back. We would recommend without reservation to anyone who is looking to get away from it all. This cottage is amazing. We love it."

"Lovely quiet place and surroundingsComfortable insideDisappointed to find remains of food on dishes ,the overhead cooker hood was dirty and the bed frame was dusty. Considering the Coronavirus outbreak doesn’t seem to have had a deep clean. However, that was a small price to pay for a lovely location."

"Lovely hideaway for a couple with a dog. Plenty of fences in garden to be secure. Our dog loved all the new smells and places to explore. For the humans it's an excellent place to relax and escape. You are surrounded by fields and the lovely south downs. Well worth a visit...you will be back for more."

"A delightful quirky cottage. Lots of character with sloping ceilings and squeaky floorboards. In an out of the way location, so not suitable for everyone. Peaceful and quiet, lots of wildlife and lovely walks."
    Barbara ‐ 18 Jul 2019
"Relaxing time. No traffic. Good Walks."
    Graham ‐ 22 Jun 2019
"Drover's Cottage is away from other properties, there is no traffic noise, just the sound of bird-song. It is cosy, and perfect if you just want to relax. The village of East Meon has one shop and two pubs and there are plenty of walks in and around the village. There are a lot of narrow lanes, some with no passing places which can be a bit daunting. However, the towns of Chichester and Winchester are within easy reach if you require more than the village shop has to offer.All-in-all, Drover's Cottage is in an excellent location."
    Penny ‐ 12 Jun 2019
"Superb location, total tranquility with an outlook onto fields and woods. Local walks available from the cottage door. The owners are there if you need them but leave you in peace if wanted. Local amenities just a short walk away"

"This cottage is so special. An absolute gem in such a peaceful, glorious, secluded location. We went with our baby and had a wonderful time of it."
    Danny ‐ 17 Feb 2019
"Beautiful cottage and wonderful surroundings and views. Quiet and relaxing and lots of wildlife."
    Paul ‐ 23 Jan 2019
"Amazing location with near 360° of dwelling-free countryside to gaze on, walks from the front door, two good pubs within a short walk.Owners very welcoming, even though E.C.C. had slipped up and not sent through our very short-notice booking to them, and we had to be sent to the pub for 30 mins (what hardship(!)) while cottage was swiftly prepared.Cottage cosy, clean and well-equipped. Lacking only a decent shower (one attached to bath taps but no standing)Will certainly try and book this cottage again."
    Martyn ‐ 7 Jan 2019
"Drover's Cottage is a real gem situated in pleasant seclusion on the edge of East Meon village. If walking and being close to nature are your thing then Drover's Cottage is the perfect spot. The cottage is clean, comfortable and very well equipped and a great place to return to after a day walking on the Hampshire Downs. Old Winchester Hill Fort and Butser Hill offer 2 fabulous viewpoints that can be easily walked directly from the cottage. "Ye Olde George" in East Meon and the "Thomas Lord" in West Meon have great food and drink. Attractions like the Watercress Line steam railway and Jane Austen's house museum are also very close. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay are keen to return."
    Rachel ‐ 2 Jan 2019
"A Fantastic cottage in idyllic surroundings and only a 15 minute walk to the village where there is two great pubs and a small shop. The cottage is very well equipped and has everything you need and more. We would definitely book again."
