Jevington and beyond

Jevington nestles on the South Downs Way just three miles from Eastbourne and near the Cuckmere Valley which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Cuckmere Haven's shingle beach and Friston Forest Walks are among the local beauty spots.

With the South Downs Way so close, you are offered a myriad of walks and cycle paths to explore. From rolling hills to bustling market towns, the South Downs National Park’s landscapes cover 1,600km2 of breathtaking views and hidden gems. The Downs meet the sea at this eastern end of the National Park and it really is a most beautiful area with the contrast of the rolling downlands and open views between the chalk cliffs at Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters at Cuckmere Haven.

Eastbourne is famously known as the sunshine coast having some of the best weather in England. Everything is within easy reach. The lower slopes of the South Downs drop down from Beachy Head on to the magnificent promenade that stretches for almost two miles to Eastbourne’s Victorian pier. It is a town that successfully mixes tradition with modern appeal. Eastbourne is a hive of activity in the summer with the aegon International Tennis in June, this is a tournament which attracts many of the world’s top tennis players as the tournament is just before Wimbledon. The Eastbourne Airborne in August is also a very popular event attracting huge crowds. This international Airshow boasts a 2 mile flying display line along Eastbourne seafront and regularly features the very best in military and civilian aviation display teams.

Herstmonceux Castle is a short drive away and offers 300 acres of woodland, formal gardens and, of course, the 15th Century moated castle. The building at the time was the largest private home in England and, since it adopted the French fashion of building in brick, the castle of Herstmonceux was unique. It is well worth a visit to learn a little about the history of the castle and relax before taking a gentle stroll around the formal gardens.

Other attractions close by for your enjoyment include Glyndbourne, with internationally renowned concerts and plays performed throughout the year, and Firle Place which is an outstanding privately owned country house in Sussex that dates from the time of Henry viii. The house, gardens and notable collection of works of art and porcelain are of national importance and will ensure a day to remember.
