About this property

Newly refurbished for 2016, this Eco Lodge is the perfect hideaway for two in the Sussex countryside

Little Marshfoot is a sleek wooden Scandinavian–style lodge that has been designed and constructed using ‘green’ principles. Set in the carefully tended garden of the owners’ farmhouse overlooking the Pevensey Levels, the lodge is a comfortable home-from-home that was designed to minimise the environmental effect from building.

Little Marshfoot is a former member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, and the owners try to operate the lodge in line with sustainable practices to minimise environmental impact.

The lodge was constructed from timber sourced from a certified sustainable forest and insulated with a product called Warmcell which is treated recycled newspapers and telephone directories. Its south east facing facade with terrace is taken up almost entirely with sliding patio doors that are treated to both insulate and exploit passive solar powered heating even in winter. During the warmth of the summer the lodge can be opened out well into the evening to make a wonderful indoor space that merges seamlessly with outdoor living. Little Marshfoot sleeps two in a bedroom containing a double bed. The bedroom has an ensuite shower room. The sitting room is very comfortably furnished with a sofa bed, and arm chairs as well as a TV with DVD player. If the sofa bed is needed for sleeping purposes there is a small supplement for the additional occupancy and linen. The sitting room opens out onto the terrace with a sliding patio door and has lovely views over the garden.

The gardens at Little Marshfoot are planted with native plants and are designed to attract a range of birds and wild animals. Considering the setting here on the edge of the Pevensey Levels this is the perfect blend with nature.

Hailsham and beyond

The East Sussex market town of Hailsham is a mile away, offering a range of shops along its main street and a variety of architecture including the Grade II Listed Pavilion cinema.

On the doorstep the Pevensey Levels is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Fertile wetland meadows stretch south eastwards to the sea at Pevensey Bay. The Levels will offer many relaxing hours exploring footpaths and bridleways with every opportunity to enjoy the bird and wildlife in this lovely area. The Levels are bordered by the South Downs that meet the sea at Eastbourne. The chalk cliffs at Beachy Head mark the start of the South Downs Way, a national trail running through the heart of the South Downs National Park, on its route to Winchester 100 miles to the west. Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters Country Park next door are spectacular areas of coastline and are within a twenty minute drive of Little Marshfoot.

The chalk cliffs at Beachy Head offer wonderful views across Eastbourne. It is an idyllic seaside resort, offering three miles of promenade that seamlessly merge with the lower slopes of the Downs, a historic Victorian pier and a relaxing ambience that encourages the visitor to want to return. The seafront is guaranteed to enrich any visit.

Nearby, the Cuckoo Trail offers 13 miles of surfaced paths through the Sussex countryside; it is a green corridor with a host of natural wildlife. The picturesque trail follows the former 'Cuckoo Line' railway track and stretches from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park. It passes through Horam, Hailsham and Polegate providing a safe route for walkers and cyclists.

Pevensey Castle, Herstmonceux Castle and Observatory are three visitor attractions in close proximity that we feature on our website under ‘Places to visit’ also check under ‘What’s On’. The Airborne and tennis tournaments are exciting events in Eastbourne that may coincide with your visit.
