About this property

Stay in this family and pet friendly holiday cottage for five in the beautiful Cinque Ports Town of Rye, East Sussex.

Set over three levels, this family holiday home is a great base for exploring all that Rye and the surrounding 1066 Country has to offer. You enter the property into the kitchen/dining room, perfectly equipped for all your holiday needs. Stairs lead up to the bedrooms. The first floor has a double bedroom to the front, with large bay windows. The second double bedroom has views over the cricket pitch and towards the river and surrounding Romney Marsh. This bedroom has a WC and hand basin cloakroom. Please mind your head as the attic room stairwell overhangs into the bedroom, one of the charms of this quirky cottage. Stairs lead to the attic bedroom; they are steep and narrow, so please take care on the way up and down. The twin bedroom is bright and airy and has far reaching views over Romney Marsh and the river.

The lounge is towards the rear of the property and the woodburning stove is a cosy focus during the colder months or chilly summer evenings. Three steps down lead to the new, modern family bathroom, with a bath and separate walk in shower enclosure. The garden is a little haven for enjoying the balmy summer evenings and table and chairs are available for outside dining. There is a garden gate that leads to parking at the rear of the property and gives you access to the town cricket pitch and a two minute stroll to the skate park for children wishing to hone their boarding and scooter skills.

There is permit parking only at the front of the property, so okay for unloading holiday bags but please do not leave your car parked here unattended. You can park for free at the rear of the property, reached by entering the Council car park further along and then turning left onto an unmade track but this may be busy on cricket match days. Alternative parking for free can be found in Military Road, a two minute walk from the property.

Rye and beyond

The Heritage Centre, a short walk away, is a good place to begin your visit to Rye. Here you can watch the town model's ' Sound and Light' show, which goes into detail about the history and the colourful past of Rye and its inhabitants. Or amble around the many antique shops in the Strand Quay and hunt out a bargain!

The town of Winchelsea is a ten minute drive away and, like Rye, has a rich history and links to the days of smugglers. One of the many cellar tours that take place during the year, is a worthy visit and a chance to see parts of the town that are not normally on show. With far reaching views over the marshes and out to sea, it really is a pleasant way to spend a few hours or pick up one of the 1066 Country trails and explore the area on foot.

A short drive away is the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, where you can walk along the sea wall and out on to the marshes to enjoy flora and fauna. You can choose to walk out to Camber Castle, originally located on a shingle spit and where once it protected the towns of Rye and Winchelsea, before the sea receded. Although no longer open to visitors, it is still a striking landmark worth a visit. The award winning beach of Camber Sands is just a five minute drive away and has miles of sandy beach and dunes to explore. Or visit the rock pools at low tide on the pebbly beach at Pett Level or walk a little further and see if you can find a dinosaur fossil at the base of the cliffs at Fairlight.

The towns of Hastings and Ashford are close by and here you can get mainline trains to London if you wish to explore the capital for a day. If you would like to take a day trip to the continent, the Eurostar can be picked up from Ashford International station and trains to Paris, Lille and Bruges are available. Alternatively, the ferries run from Dover, just 45 minutes away or the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone, a 45 minute drive.

Fantastic quirky property within footsteps of Rye. Parking at the rear was convenient and FREE. We comfortably housed a family of five without any troubles. We would definitely return in the future!
