About this property

Stay in this beautiful 17th Century thatched holiday cottage on the fringes of Battle, 1066 Country.

Be part of a picture postcard setting at the Thatched Cottage, just two miles to the west of Battle. This English 17th Century cottage is very atmospheric with its traditional beams, old fashioned lighting and furnishings. Step inside and smell the open fire burning in the great Inglenook fireplace and take yourself back hundreds of years. This cottage has been lovingly restored by its owners and retains the magic and period character of the age yet offers you the comforts of modern living.

Set in an acre of beautiful gardens and grounds that back onto the Normanhurst Forest it is a private setting and is accessed through secure oak gates. The cottage has its own private garden within the owners' grounds. The cottage will sleep up to four adults or two adults and two children in two bedrooms, one being a double and the other with twin beds. Upstairs there is also a traditional bathroom with bath and telephone style shower attachment in keeping with the period of the building.

The main living room is beautifully presented and is split cleverly into two with the dining area separated from the sitting room by traditional cottage posts. The ‘cottage kitchen’ is spacious and like any quintessential English cottage would not be complete without a traditional Aga. For your convenience an electric oven and hob are also provided.

Such is the privacy and setting here it is only for guest enjoyment and regrettably other visitors cannot be accommodated.

Battle and beyond

The Thatched Cottage is just two miles to the west of the historic town of Battle and Battle Abbey. The magnificent Abbey is so central to the town and a visit here takes you to the heart of 1066 Country. The Abbey was of course founded by William the Conqueror on the site of the Battle of Hastings and today is an English Heritage site. When William died he left many gifts to the Abbey that include his royal cloak and a portable altar used on his campaigns. Today the Abbey has a wealth of interactive displays and a café that offers wonderful views across the battlefield.

Three miles to the south Hastings Old Town is full of historic buildings and quaint streets and is particularly famous for its beach fishing fleet, the largest in Europe. Much of the tradition has been kept and the net drying huts are today preserved at the top of the beach and sit amongst the many fresh fish stores at the foot of the cliffs. The Shipwreck and Coastal Heritage Museum is also found here and worth visiting; we carry a link under our ‘Places to Visit’ section.

This whole area is of course 1066 Country and we could comment forever about what there is to see and do. Take a look at all our ‘Places to Visit’ for East Sussex.

The owners of this property offer a very warm and friendly welcome and immediately make you feel relaxed. The location is terrific as it has easy access to lots of places to visit and things to do.The property has a fantastic large garden that is yours to enjoy while staying there. The owners have a collection of pets that they are happy for you to feed and pet which was really great. The cottage is 16th century and the decor and design of interior is sympathetic to this era, however it is very comfortable.
