Denton and beyond

Denton is a small village, inside the town boundary of Newhaven, which backs onto the beautiful landscape of the South Downs. The parish church, St. Leonard's, is situated opposite Gran's Cottage. This church was first built around 1288 and later extended and carefully restored, there is also the remains of what is thought to have been a Priest's House in the west end of the churchyard which dates from about 1280. It is just a short walk from the cottage to the church and then onwards to access many pathways on the Downs and experience the wonderful views to the sea beyond.

Newhaven and the coast are just 1.5 miles from Gran's Cottage where you can find much to explore including the Newhaven Fort which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the South Downs and Sussex coast. This coastal Fortress was built during the 1860's and overlooks both Newhaven Harbour and Seaford Bay. From here you can enjoy many walks westward along the coast to Telscombe Cliffs and beyond towards Brighton.

Further along the coast to the east, there is the Seven Sisters Country Park which is made up of 280 hectares of chalk cliffs, with a meandering river valley and open chalk grassland. It is a popular place for a number of outdoor activities including walking, birdwatching, cycling and canoeing. The park is named after the famous Seven Sisters chalk cliffs which are on one of Britain's finest unspoilt coastlines and are well worth a day trip for the spectacular views alone.

Just 20 minutes drive and you can be exploring the wonderful historic market town of Lewes. This impressive town is home to Lewes Castle which offers magnificent views across the town of Lewes and the surrounding downland. The adjacent Barbican House holds an extensive collection of local history and archaeological artefacts. The River Ouse flows through the town dividing it into two areas between Cliffe High Street presented in beautiful period style with its gateway, a paved bridge, crossing the river and the main High Street that heads up the hill. There are a multitude of cafes, restaurants and bars to visit in Lewes and, if you visit on the first Saturday of the month, there is a thriving Farmers’ Market with lots of delicious fare on offer!

Gran's Cottage is also perfectly positioned for access to Glyndebourne with its busy programme of international cultural events, Drusillas Farm Park for all year round family fun and the wonderful historic stately home of Firle Place. Also, with the bustling cosmopolitan city of Brighton just 40 minutes drive away, the hardest part of your holiday will be trying to fit everything in!
