About this property

Not quite a farm stay holiday but almost as good as! A lovely rural setting this country cottage is just two miles from Lewes

You will find this country cottage on a quiet rural lane that tracks along beside the South Downs. On the very edge of the village of Ringmer and only two miles from historic Lewes, this wonderful traditional cottage sits within the grounds of the owners' country home. With more than two acres to explore beyond the private south facing garden it makes for a relaxing and restful holiday.

Vane Cottage is a comfortable home for up to four guests that retains those traditional cottage features of a bygone period. The sitting room with a corner fireplace has a woodburning stove and a separate dining room is next to the kitchen. For any young family there is also a separate room for children with games and soft toys. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, the main bedroom is fitted with a double bed while bedroom two has twin beds. The family bathroom also on the first floor is fitted with a bath and a telephone shower attachment.

Ringmer and beyond

Vane Cottage is on the extreme edge of Ringmer, in fact it is closer to Barcombe Mills on the River Ouse before it flows into Lewes. Barcombe Mills has always been important for milling. Today a number of weirs still exist and it is an important area for its wildlife and natural beauty offering many wonderful riverside walks.

The historic market town of Lewes is only two miles away. It is a fantastic place to visit - full of cafes, restaurants and bars. The River Ouse flows through the town dividing it into two areas between Cliffe High Street presented in beautiful period style with its gateway, a paved bridge, crossing the river and the main High Street that heads up the hill.

Lewes is the county town of East Sussex . The castle at the top of the town is open to visitors as is the Barbican Museum opposite. It offers a peaceful area immediately off the High Street. In the town’s Southover district is Anne of Cleves House which is also open to the public. It was left by Henry viii as a settlement in their divorce.

The town has Harvey’s Brewery central to the town. Built in the 18th century it still produces fine ales. There is a shop and restaurant close by with many pubs owned by the brewery in the near vicinity.

Visiting Lewes on the first Saturday of the month is recommended when the thriving Farmers’ Market comes to town with lots of delicious fare on offer!

The world famous opera house at Glyndebourne is three miles away so the cottage makes a perfect base to enjoy the prestigious Glyndebourne Festival.

Travel ten minutes towards Uckfield you will find the Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum within the grounds of a beautifully furnished Palladian mansion with gardens to match. As the name suggests there is a wildfowl reserve with an amazing collection of ducks, geese and swans, together with a motor museum with a unique collection of vintage and classic cars. An unusual combination, but worth visiting.

Further afield Sheffield Park Gardens and the Bluebell Railway are within easy reach, together with the village of Alfriston with its Clergy House and beyond that the Seven Sisters Country Park, Beachy Head and the seaside resort of Eastbourne.

We really enjoyed Vane Cottage. Beautiful house in a gorgeous garden, that the owner offered full use of during our stay. Location was perfect for the South Downs, Weald, Lewes, as well as local walks, with footpaths so close. Guy was very hospitable and helpful.
