Stay in this luxurious, romantic holiday cottage for four, that is right in the heart of 1066 Country, close to Battle, Hastings and Rye, East Sussex.

Grade II listed and formerly home to the Beauport Home Farm workers, Little Turret has bags of character and quirky features. Originally part of an estate, the property, possibly a former forge, is now a gem among a row of modern houses in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex. The property has been sympathetically renovated, keeping original features and combining Farrow and Ball colours with William Morris and Andrew Martin featured wallpapers.

As the name suggests, you enter the property at the base of the turret and make your way up the winding stone staircase into the lounge. Do stop to admire the ceiling on your way up, you won’t be disappointed. Original stripped floorboards, a mixture of new and up-cycled furniture and the woodburning stove create a cosy ambience for relaxing in the lounge. Off the lounge you will find a double bedroom, which has been tastefully decorated, a comfy bed and quality bed linen. The galley style kitchen off the lounge is well equipped with all the modern requirements you would expect from a holiday home. The dining room with large dining table and chairs is a great entertaining space with the added benefit of another woodburning stove. Imagine the autumn and winter, dining with the crackle of the fire while you sit and relax after a day exploring the local area. Even the cloakroom has not escaped the interior design finish, a surprise behind every door.

A flight of stairs leads up to the master bedroom, with large kingsize rococo bed, luxury bed linen and the unusual round window, which, on a clear day, gives you a view all the way to the sea. On this floor you will find a beautiful bathroom with roll top bath, a quiet tranquil space to while away an hour holiday pampering.

To the side of the turret you will find off road parking and a decked area to enjoy the summer mornings or balmy evenings with a tipple of your choice.

St Leonards on Sea and beyond

A short drive from the property is the seafront of St Leonards on Sea, a growing vibrant community favoured by artists and musicians. You will find a thriving cafe culture, galleries, antique and bric brac shops to browse. The Independent cinema on Normans Road is a favourite and a must visit by locals, so be sure to stop by. The town is a popular spot for live music and acts can be found performing in local bars or just along the road at the Del La Warr Pavilion, in Bexhill. The seafront is well liked by walkers, runners and cyclists and you can wander as far as the Country Park at Hastings or the sea front at Bexhill without venturing onto the road.

Hastings Old Town is picturesque and quaint, with a mixture of antique shops, boutiques and cafes. The town is famous for the biggest beach fishing fleet in Europe and much of the tradition has been kept. The net drying huts and fishing fleet can be found on the beach today, along with the many fresh fish stalls. The Jerwood Gallery is found close by and The Shipwreck and Coastal Heritage Museum are both worth a visit.

The Hastings Country Park is over 267 hectares of ancient woodland, heathland and grassland together with three miles (5km) of dramatic cliffs and coastline. Lying within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, most of the park has been designated a Special Area of Conservation, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is a designated Local Nature Reserve.

Little Turret is just four miles from the historic town of Battle and Battle Abbey. The magnificent Abbey is very central to the town and a visit here takes you to the heart of 1066 Country. The Abbey was of course, founded by William the Conqueror on the site of the Battle of Hastings and today it is an English Heritage site. When William died, he left many gifts to the Abbey that included his royal cloak and a portable altar used on his campaigns. Today the Abbey has a wealth of interactive displays and a cafe that offers wonderful views across the battlefield.
