About this property

Enjoy a romantic break away in this wonderful top floor apartment right in the heart of Eastbourne

This is a fabulous top floor apartment that is part of a Victorian townhouse. Once owned by the Duke of Devonshire following its construction in 1836, the Duke’s Apartment occupies the second and third floors of this magnificently converted building. It offers exceptional accommodation with views over Devonshire Park, the town and beyond to the South Downs.

This two bedroom apartment will sleep four, however a small bed can be added to the main bedroom for a young child to use where a little flexibility for family accommodation is needed.

The main living room and kitchen overlook Devonshire Park and capture the afternoon and evening sun in spectacular style. It is certainly a romantic retreat at the top of the building making it just perfect for couples. There are bath robes provided in the main bedroom and the bathroom has a twin Jacuzzi bath (along with a wall mounted shower), great for a leisurely bath toasted with champagne of course! The main bedroom is fitted with a king sized bed and is a bright spacious room that really makes the most of the views over the town and to Devonshire Park. The second bedroom is fitted with twin beds and is a really attractive room presented with much flair.

Beach towels are also provided for your convenience and it is a gentle three minute stroll to the seaside promenade.

The Duke’s Apartment shares the townhouse with both Keesha House Apartment, the Duchess Apartment and the Devonshire Apartment all of which are also shown on our website. For a party of up to twelve friends the four apartments could combine really well. If this is of interest do let us know.

Parking is on street outside where the owner can provide a parking voucher. There is also free parking in the adjacent roads.

Eastbourne and beyond

There is very good reason why Eastbourne is known as the sunshine coast since it attracts some of the best weather in England. Everything is within easy reach here. The lower slopes of the South Downs drop down from Beachy Head on to the magnificent promenade that stretches for almost two miles to Eastbourne’s Victorian Pier. It is a town of tradition yet it has very much a modern feel with plentiful restaurants and bars within minutes of the Duke’s Apartment.

In the summer Eastbourne comes alive with the very popular Airborne together with the aegon International Tennis, a tournament that attracts many of the world’s top tennis players just prior to Wimbledon. The tournament which is held in Devonshire Park can of course be seen from the apartment.

With its sheltered setting next to Beachy Head, Eastbourne also has some of the best Blue Flag beaches along the south coast, so with its excellent sunshine record Eastbourne makes for a wonderful holiday. A short distance to the east, the Sovereign Harbour Marina is one of the premier marinas in the south-east of England with many prestigious yachts moored here.

Beachy Head is a magnificent backdrop, with its dramatic chalk cliffs and gently undulating Downs. It is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and marks the start of the 100 mile South Downs Way and the South Downs National Park.

From Beachy Head there are breathtaking views over the English Channel and down to Eastbourne. The white cliffs would not be complete without mention of the Beachy Head Lighthouse, one of the most recognisable sites in the whole of England. A short distance further west is the Belle Toute Lighthouse an impressive sight on the top of the chalk cliffs and made famous by the BBC who used it for the filming of Fay Weldon’s ‘Life and Loves of a She-Devil’.

It looks down on the small community at Birling Gap which sadly is gradually disappearing through cliff erosion. Heading west from Birling Gap the chalk cliffs rise towards the famous Seven Sisters, one of the most photographed views in England, before reaching the river estuary at Cuckmere Haven. Here the ox-bow lakes within the river are perfect for canoeing and kayaking activity.

To the east of Eastbourne, Pevensey and Pevensey Castle are on the edge of the Pevensey Levels, another Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and important for its birdlife and wildlife. The Levels are bordered to the north by the small town of Hailsham where there is the magnificent castle at Herstmonceux as well as the Observatory Science Centre both close to Hailsham.

We all really enjoyed our stay, The owner could not have been nicer or more helpfully. The items such as the milk, wine, biscuits and chocolates provided freely were much appreciated. Furthermore, the daily parking tickets were very useful. We would love to stay there again.
