About this property

Wootton House is a superb country house on the edge of the unspoiled hamlet of Butleigh Wootton on the Somerset levels. Constructed in the 18th cent., this striking house sits on a 1,000 acre estate comprising gardens, woods, parkland and working farms. The house is comfortable, elegant, and well loved. You enter through a large front hall with wood floors and oak panelling which leads to the equally impressive back hall with twin pianos; a handsome Steinway grand and an upright. The house has two reception rooms; a sitting room with a marble fireplace and fine paintings and a lovely drawing room with damask wallpaper, an open fire and French windows to the front garden. Overlooking the rear garden is a large formal dining room where the long oak dining table sits before an enormous Jacobean-style ornamental fireplace - perfect for dinner parties or that special occasion. The kitchen is huge and very well equipped - there's everything you'll need here to cater for your group, including a 4-door Aga and pantry, and for something a bit special, professional catering can be arranged. The Abbot’s Room, an enormous games room with table tennis, children's snooker table, darts, TV and PlayStation 2 will ensure that there's always plenty to do, even on those not so sunny days. On the first floor is a library area with window seats and eight bedrooms, four double rooms, one with an en suite bathroom, and two four poster beds, and four twin rooms, one with an en suite shower room. Outside is a large mature garden where you can play croquet on the lawn, a hard tennis court and climbing frames, slides and swings for the children. Famous for its annual music festival and tor, the nearby town of Glastonbury has all the amenities you could need, and is well worth a visit. The beautiful cathedral city of Wells, Wookey Hole Caves and historic Bath, are also within easy reach. With so much to see and do, Wootton House is sure to be a real hit with all the family.

A rural village nestling at the head of the dreamy Somerset levels. Lush green meadows, meandering rivers, abundant wildlife all surrounded by steep and wooded hills; the countryside doesn't come much better than this!

It's proximity to Glastonbury, it's wonderful views, it's warm kitchen, massive dining room, big bedrooms and comfy lounge area were great for a group of 13. Not to mention the piano room with two pianos. We loved every second of our stay there.

The house facilities were perfectly adequate for a large group and the expansive gardens greatly appreciated. The object of a Grade II listing is to curb unwarranted change; that is true of it's character too. Sure, have an information pack somewhere, sort out the roof leak in the toyroom, the broken shower control handles and clear the tennis court of beech nuts, and maybe even a judicious lick of paint, but whatever you do, don't destroy this quintessential English country house by modernising it.

Plenty of inside space and well equipped kitchen & utility. Bathrooms excellent with plenty of hot water. Reception room sofas and chairs adequate but very tired. Decor and carpets also tired but clean. A large amount of family history in the shape of pictures and mementos in every room on all horizontal surfaces and walls which leant to an overall interesting appearance but susceptible to accidental damage. A bit like staying in an old museum. Overall all party members (adults and children) enjoyed the holiday.
