    About this property

A wonderful conversion of a former Victorian powerhouse, 800 yards from the sandy beach in the former fishing village of Skinningrove. Restored to a very high standard, this house in Skinningrove includes a magnificent entrance hall with central ash staircase leading to a galleried landing with leaded glass dome. The Power House offers superb, light and airy accommodation, including a sitting room with feature Victorian cast iron fireplace, arched windows and sea views. Two separate kitchens provide all the facilities that you will need including a glorious Yorkshire range, a real focal point of this Skinningrove cottage, and one of the dining tables incorporates a slate bed snooker table. There are two sitting rooms, both with TVs, one of which has a double sofa bed and ramped access, which may make this delightful property suitable for accompanied disabled. Six bedrooms include two with four poster beds and two with en-suite bathrooms, offering a touch of luxury as well as great flexibility over the sleeping arrangements. A family sized bedroom that sleeps four has two single beds on a mezzanine floor with a distinctive porthole giving sea views, plus there are three further bathrooms, one of which boasts a beautiful roll-top slipper bath. The historic town of Whitby and the coastal villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay are all easily reached, as is the lovely scenery of the nearby North York Moors National Park, making this a great Skinningrove holiday cottage for exploring this fabulous region, any time of the year.

This former fishing village is on the Cleveland Way, and visitors will find a collection of interesting houses and a good variety of shops and a beautiful sandy beach within its boundaries. As well as being a fishing village, Skinningrove was part of the Ironstone Mining Industry and there is a museum in the area that charts the history of this industry. Saltburn is just six miles away and has retained much of its Victorian charm, including the pier, colourful Italian Gardens and the oldest water balanced cliff tramway in Britain, well worth a visit. Skinningrove is ideally placed as a base to explore the dramatic scenery of the moors and the many coastal towns and villages in the area, making it a great holiday base.

"The Power House was lovely! We really enjoyed our stay, it was like a home away from home. Clean, spacious, everything we needed under one roof. The hot tub and sauna were amazing and were the icing on the cake."

"We have just arrived home today after a fantastic couple of days at the Power House. We were a group of 13 for a hen party - we typically aren't a fan traipsing round the city with various hen do miscellany so hiring a cottage for the weekend was the perfect alternative. The house is stocked well - tea coffee and a packet of biscuits on arrival was a nice touch. The beds were very comfy (at least mine was, and judging by some of the lie-ins the rest of the group had, they can't have been half bad :) ) The house is lovely - plenty of room for everyone and plenty of bathrooms and showers etc, so no queuing for facilities. Two kitchens helped the breakfast prep no end!! We also wanted to spend time as a group, and there was plenty of space around the kitchen table / snooker table. There is a large Asda about a 10 min drive away from the Power House, so easy to get the essentials in. We went into Saltburn for the day on Saturday - a minibus for the group was £20 each way which was extremely reasonable. Saltburn was great though we did spend the majority of our time in the lovely Vista Mar..... Definitely get some fish and chips from the Seaview, Delicious! Ah and yes - the hot tub. Lots of fun, it is very funky with the multi-coloured lights and the music system, really does add something to the party!! Bring your flip flops as the floor does get a bit slippy... Great weekend, one which us girls will be talking about for a while!! Thank you!!"

"We had my hen do at the Powerhouse last weekend and then stayed on for the week. It is the perfect place to relax in the hot tub & have fun. I have never had such a relaxing holiday. The photos do not do it justice! It is amazing. The staircase when you enter is just breathtaking. The beds were realkly compfy and the place was clean and had everything you need. There is plenty in the house to keep you occupied, like board games, snooker table, DVD's, books and plenty of old school CD's! Skinningrove has got a beautiful beach, perfect for the doggies. It is an easy drive to Whitby but far enough to not have all the hustle & bustle. There is a great friendly little pub just next door and a little chippy 5 minutes walk away (you need to try the whitby scampy!) The owners of the Powerhouse are lovely. I would recommend the powerhouse and we will be back!"
    Miss Bird
"Amazing place! The pictures do not do the place justice, it is so much more! The hot tub rooom is fantastic, plenty of entertainment stuff like, games, CD's, DVD's and the snooker tyable! We stayed for a hen weekend and then stayed on the week. The place is amazing in a great location with a jem of a beach in Skinningrove. We will defginitly be back. I would definitly recommend the Powerhouse."

"We found the house more than suitable for our needs, good location easy to get around with a car, excellent eating place next door virtually, the mining museum excellent too, are certainly going back."
    Mrs Thornton
"We was impressed with the property and Mike the owner extremely nice and helpful and look forward to returning"
    Mrs Doubleday, Norfolk
"There was plenty of room for 11 adults in the property and it was in a good location."
    Mrs Adele Tordoff, Heckmondwike,
"We found the holiday amazing and had the best time so really happy. I have recommended to friends and shown pictures and would definitely book again in a shot. The Kaskane cafe/bar was brilliant being so close too - perfect! We were blessed with weather also as an added bonus so the walk to the beach worked well too."
Mrs Joanne Cockburn, South Shields, Tyne and Wear
"An amazing property, the photos don't do it justice. The rooms were clean and had lovely bed linen, towels were provided. The kitchen(s) were perfect, fully fitted with appliances and utensils. The living spaces were ideal for our group, there were plenty of sofas. Everything was simply catered for. Some of my group are looking to re book for their personal use at a later date. Highly recommended."
Miss Sarah Robinson, Selby, North Yorkshire
"Loved the summer house with the hot tub and loved the house itself. Considering how many people it can hold it was quiet and there's enough space."
Mrs Marie Ellis, Birmingham, West Midlands
"The Power House is an amazing place for a large family to have a break, there is loads of room so you can have alone time if wanted. The hot tub amazing. "
Ms Loraine Campbell, Salford, Greater Manchester
"Loved the size of the property, we were a party of 12 and there was enough bedrooms for all our party, this gave everyone their own space. The hot tub and pool table were the real selling point to my using of the property, because Skinningrove is such a small area it meant our party could spend time together."
    Mrs Amanda Emson, Brecon, Powys
"We had an amazing stay at The Power House. There was plenty of room for all of us to spread out and be comfortable. The hot tub was also a boon and enjoyed by all. We were able to host a wonderful and memorable 80th birthday dinner for my father-in-law, and cooked a banquet for twenty-two in the two well equipped kitchens. A day that will be cherished for many years. We loved it even in December, and would love to come again in the summer too, to make use of the great looking BBQ area.Thank you for providing the space to have a great, big family get-together! "
    Mr James Paterson, Leven,
"Everyone really enjoyed the generous space this property offered. The two sitting rooms were particularly useful. As we did our own catering, the two kitchens provided all the facilities we needed to prepare all our meals. This was a family gathering to celebrate our ruby wedding and we took some group photos on the lovely feature staircase. We wouldn't hesitate to come back ."
Mrs Ann Lyons, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
"A very spacious House ideal for a large family group like ours. The hot tub was scrupulously clean and checked regularly by the owner who was very pleasant and helpful. "
    Mr Ian Jackson, Bradford,
"A brilliant property for the occasion (a 50th birthday), flexible sleeping and good size lounges to enable everyone to get together but also to have some space when needed. House is beautiful, spacious and unique, a real pleasure to be able to spend a week there. Lots of bathrooms too made life much easier! Pet friendly too was a real bonus and made the holiday with friends and family complete."

"Stayed here for a hen weekend in June. It was fantastic. The house is so grand, everyone was so impressed. Clean towels and linen provided. We thought it was all very clean and tidy. The hot tub in the summer house was amazing, mood lighting and music too. Very good location, it was easy to find and in a lovely village. I would definitely recommend this and would stay again."
Mrs Claire McCormack, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
"The Power House is a beautiful house the pictures on the website don't do it justice. The house is well equipped and very clean, the hot tub is lovely. We went as a large family group and everyone thought the place was fabulous, the location is a good base to discover North Yorkshire. I would recommend the Power House to family and friends."
    Mrs Lorraine Reed, Sheffield,
"A large house with beautiful décor, perfect for our party."
    Mrs Carol Bonsall, Derby,
"The whole Power House experience was brilliant! There was plenty of room for all of us, with a beautifully presented house that suited our needs excellently."
Mrs Andrea Winspear, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire
"We had an amazing time, The Power House was faultless and the village it is in was pleasant and friendly. There is a pub/restaurant virtually next door that is very friendly, serves lovely meals and welcomes children and dogs. The Power House itself is an amazing place to stay, it has plenty of room for family's to spend a holiday together without been under each others feet, it has everything you could possibly need and more. It is beautiful to look at and is in a nice quiet location and its own grounds are private, ideal if you want to have a BBQ. All in all I couldn't find fault in the place and would and have recommended it to my family and friends."
Mrs Julie Baxter, Barnsley, South Yorkshire
"This was our 2nd visit to The Power House and it did not disappoint. An excellent stay, we had a lovely 3 days and I cannot fault the place, it has everything for a fantastic family break. The facilities were top notch, there isn't one thing to complain about, only the the fact that we had to come home. Looking forward to booking this property again, it is excellent for large groups or families."

    - Mrs Welch, April 2019
"The whole family went for my mums 80th birthday ages between 1 and 80. Great location, a walk to the beach, kaskane two minutes away, superb good quality food, welcoming staff. A bit hilly for our bikes, up and down hill after hill. I would highly recommend it."
    - BoardingPass616336, October 2018
"What an amazing place. We stayed here with family for a week to celebrate my husband’s 70th bday. Everyone had a great time. Our dogs had a great time too, very dog friendly."
    - Ms Cherry, September 2018
"A few issues with showers leaking and could do with an overhaul clean to get back to standard. Small rips in snooker table and couldn’t find a triangle. Good base for exploring surrounding area. Hot tub and sauna was great, lovely and clean, well maintained."

"Having booked accommodation through Cottages previously we had high expectations for this trip as it had been given a 4 tick rating (the same rating as a previous booking elsewhere in the UK). Unfortunately, we were very disappointed upon arrival by the cleanliness of the property. Whilst it was clear that some basic cleaning had taken place as part of the changeover, we all felt there was a need for a deep-clean throughout the property: skirting boards and surfaces throughout were incredibly dusty, the kitchen units has a thick layer of sticky grime on them and an unacceptable amount of dust, cobwebs and debris lay under the furniture in the 2 reception rooms (including pistachio shells under one sofa). The floors throughout the ground floor were very dirty and the toddler and small children who were playing on the floors had black feet within a few hours of being in the house. The kitchen facilities were ok, but not what we would expect from a 4 tick rating - the only coffee pot was broken, the two ovens were filthy, the dishwashers and washing machines hadn't been wiped down in a long while and the door to the grill in one kitchen was broken. One set of crockery is also terribly chipped and most of the mattresses are in need of being replaced. The snooker table is poorly maintained as it has a large rip in the cloth. The house itself provides a great space for a big group but it was severely let down by the standard of cleanliness and general upkeep. Previous reviews had commented on its immaculate condition; sadly that was not the state we found the house in. We strongly disagree with the rating of the property and feel rather disgruntled that we paid for a standard of accommodation that was a long way off what we received."
    - Mrs Pinnegar, July 2018
"The property was grubby throughout, many of the showers were broken and also the snooker table was in disrepair. There was only one stair gate provided for five entrances to staircases. We loved the spacious property but was disappointed by the lack of cleanliness."
    - Miss Barlow, July 2018
"Perfect for a large family getaway..we had 2 birthday celebrations and I got married whilst we were holidaying there.. Loved every minute of it and even the locals were very friendly."

"Excellent facilities, with everythng you could need. I came prepared with my own pots, cooking items, etc. because usually these sort of properties never have enough or decent cooking equipment however the Powerhouse property already had them available in the kitchen and where pretty decent quality. Very friendly owners. Can't wait to go back."
    - Mrs Kirkbride, November 2017
    "Thank you"
    - Mrs Faulkner, December 2017
"The owners have thought about everything you would need as a family or group of friends looking for a place that feels like home and is big enough to party."
    - Mr Skarratt, December 2017
"The sauna and hot tub are brilliant and the snooker table a really good idea. Mike was warm and welcoming and took us through all the features of the Power House. All in all, it made it easy to enjoy a family weekend for 14 of us celebrating a Ruby wedding anniversary."
    - Mrs Perry, January 2018
"We had a great time in the hot tub the children loved the snooker/pool table. The teenager loved the fact that he could have one of the living rooms and TV set up for his PS4 whilst the adults had the other living room. The adults loved that we had Netflix for once the children were in bed to relax on a night. The bedrooms were clean and lots of space and very comfy beds, well mine was. I had the family room with the upstairs area which our 8 year snd 5 year old children loved. The village you walked through to get to the beach is a little run down but it didn't impact on our holiday and the beach had lots of dogs walking and was clean. Have already recommended the house to a friend. Thanks Jade"
    - Mrs Shaw, March 2018
"Only downside we had to cook our own full English breakfast as the café doesn't open until 11! I would heartily recommend if you want a base for that area of the coast/moors for a large party. Easy to book, everyone so friendly and helpful."
    - Mr Cooper, May 2018
"Mike was helpful, pleasant and responded quickly to any queries we had."
    - Mrs Kenyon, May 2018
"Secure garden and parking, and nice to return to at the end of the day after walking. Some of the rooms only had single beds, which would suit singletons better, but rooms are large. A friendly enough village, which had a café/pub within walking distance, and a friendly shop near the beach."
    - Mrs Madin, June 2018
"Lovely, spacious and well equipped. We were blessed with superb weather too. Some great coastal footpath walking along the Cleveland Way to Saltburn and Staithes from Skiningrove . Would highly recommend the Cod and Lobster pub in Staithes for food ....scrummy! Great fish and chips from the Skiningrove chip shop and they do gluten free that made my Mums day! Mike, thank you for taking care of the jacuzzi and being on hand for any queries we had."
    - Mrs Tordoff, June 2018
"We went for my husband's 50th with family and friends and 3 doggies - evertone had a blast. The sauna was a nice addition instead of the log burner. We had glorious weather too so made it even More special as the beach is gorgeous. Would defo recommend and Mike the owner is always helpful !"

"We booked a 3 night stay at the Power House as part of my mums 60th birthday celebrations. There were 11of us including 2 under 3's and 2 16 year olds. Each and every one of us had a blast! The house was immaculate, it's spacious but warm and cosy. We definitely felt it was a home away from home. There were 2 fully equipped kitchens and 2 living rooms with everything we needed. We also had tea, coffee and biscuits waiting for us on arrival. We were also given a full tour of the house and instructions on how everything worked upon arrival. The hot tub and sauna were the icing on the cake and we made the most of the facilities every night! We took a trip to Skinningrove beach, which was a short drive away and the kids absolutely loved it. The following day we went to Whitby which was also lovely and only about 30 minutes away. We had a truly wonderful time and the venue is suitable for any sort of break with family or friends. I would definitely book again for a girls getaway in the future."

"First impressions was of a beautiful weĺl presented large house . Lots of rooms for the 9 of us that visited (included 2 infants who were supplied with cots, high chairs and walkers) however the house would benefit from some repairs that would make it even more impressive. We noticed broken toilet roll holders, toilet seats that didn't fit, broken curtain tie backs etc. A deep clean of some area would also improve the experience. However we had a great break and the owners couldn't have been more helpful."

"A fantastic place to stay for large groups with ample space, plenty of seating in two lounges and good bathroom facilities even for the non-en suite rooms. "Our party of 16 friends and family stayed here for a long weekend in early January and had an amazing time. There are three birthdays in the group within three days so we always go away that same weekend. The age ranges were 14 to 73. The house was ideal, with lots of living space so we didn't feel on top of each other at all. The house is very clean, is beautifully decorated and the furniture is all to a very high standard. The house was lovely and warm all the time. The house is perfect for a large friends/family get-together. There are two large bedrooms with four poster beds which are en-suite. There is one double bedroom with two twin beds on a mezzanine floor. There is one treble bedroom and two further rooms with twin beds, one of which is en-suite. There is one shower room and toilet on the ground floor and a further bathroom on the second floor. The beds are really comfy and the bed linen was all really clean and good quality. We never struggled for hot water even though all five showers were running at the same time on the Saturday morning. There are two fully equipped kitchens with three large dining tables, one of which is also a snooker table. We cooked a Christmas dinner for all 16 adults on the Sunday and didn’t struggle for oven space or roasting tins and pans etc. We had brought three slow cookers for the Saturday night but there were two large ones in the house anyway. There’s are two large fridge-freezers (we used one for food and one for beer) and two dishwashers. There are two lounge areas, both really comfortable. Both have large TVS one of which is fitted with Netflix so we used that one more than the other room. Outside there is a separate building with a large hot tub and a small sauna. The house is in a good quiet location, there is a restaurant (KasKane) within 2 minutes walk that service excellent food and reasonable prices. We had a fabulous time and will definitely look to book again!!!"

"Just got back yesterday 22nd January, what a fabulous weekend we all had 16 of us and a dog. The house is beautiful couldn't ask for anything better, there was 7 kid's and they were no bother at all kept busy with the hot tub and pool table. Would recommend the power house and we will definitely be going back thank you."

"Stayed here for a week to welcome in the new year with family and friends. There were 17 of us in total ranging from 12 months to 56 years old! Every single one of us had a blast, lots to do around the house with the games supplied, hot tub and sauna, Netflix and the pool/snooker table. The owners were very helpful and it's a straight road, 30 minute drive to whitby so perfectly located. Myself and my partner stayed in the double room with en suite At the end of the long corridor and on three separate nights there was a strong smell of burning matches but we couldn't find anyone burning them which was very odd but the house is so welcoming and cosy. The beds are super comfy and two fridges are perfect for storing the food and alcohol separate! I can't recommend this place highly enough, if you're a large group looking for a get away then I highly recommend you try the power house!"

"We we're a family of 9 adults, 1 teenager and 5 children including my mum, dad, auntie, uncle ,sister and cousins plus the children and everyone had a great time the house was perfect to celebrate my mums 60th birthday. We had a great time in the hot tub the children loved the snooker/pool table.
"Beautiful spacious house, good sized rooms so even with a large party you could get away for piece and quiet. Only downside we had to cook our own full English breakfast as the café doesn't open until 11! I would heartily recommend if you want a base for that area of the coast/moors for a large party. Easy to book, everyone so friendly and helpful."
    - Mr Cooper, May 2018
"Had everything we needed for a large family gathering with enough space to ensure privacy plus areas where all could sit together. Mike was helpful, pleasant and responded quickly to any queries we had."
    - Mrs Kenyon, May 2018
"The Power House is a great place to stay when there is a group of you, and great for the dogs. Secure garden and parking, and nice to return to at the end of the day after walking. Some of the rooms only had single beds, which would suit singletons better, but rooms are large. A friendly enough village, which had a café/pub within walking distance, and a friendly shop near the beach."
    - Mrs Madin, June 2018
"The house was just as described. Lovely, spacious and well equipped.
"WE have been before and had an amazing time, so therefore we knew what to expect. We went for my husband's 50th with family and friends and 3 doggies - evertone had a blast. The sauna was a nice addition instead of the log burner. We had glorious weather too so made it even More special as the beach is gorgeous. Would defo recommend and Mike the owner is always helpful !"
    - Mrs Mcconville, June 2018
"The house was lovely, very spacious. It was like having a small hotel all to ourselves. Couldn't find anything to fault it."
    - Mrs Sandall, July 2018
"The house was brilliant but only downside for us as a group of 13 was having two kitchens which made it hard work . The local beach absolute gem we went crabing of jetty and it also on the Cleveland way which my partner bid a walk on.The little shop does amazing pies and the pub served good food at good prices"
    - Mrs Davies, February 2019
"The house had everything we needed for a fun holiday and the sauna hot tub was enjoyed by all. There was lots of room too ,ideal for sneaking away for a lazy hour with a good book.Would recommend to anyone.Looking forward now to our week in the dales come June."
    - Mrs Westwood, December 2018
"......we had an amazing time at The Powerhouse. Mike was very welcoming and gave us a tour of the house and showed us the basics. This house was perfect for our group where we celebrated New Year 2018, lots of space for everyone. The only point that I would raise is not a fault of the owner and more of a note for guest attending, noise travels and you can hear every little noise/ conversation throughout the house. The pool table is not in the best condition but this didn't stop our group playing many many many hours of play pool, brilliant fun and a great feature. The highlight was the hot-tub and the Smart TV (lots of dancing from you-tube connections), all the facilities were good and the bedding was fresh and smelt beautiful. We have made some great memories at this property and would certainly return. Prefect for friends and family groups and very dog friendly."
    - Mrs Lomas, September 2019
"Two kitchens worked well - one for the meat eaters; one for the veggies. Having two lounges meant 'kids' could escape adults and vice versa."
    Mrs Elizabeth Woodward, Nuneaton,
"The facilities included were perfect with all the comforts from home. We prepared family meals every day with ease. The kitchens were great and having a full size fridge/freezer helped as we were able to do a "big shop" for the week. The House was luxurious and large enough for us all to have our own space if we wanted it and the cosy lounges were great for us all to spend time together too. Best of both worlds! We were within walking distance of the sandy beach which the dogs loved and a lovely coffee shop/cafe/bar 2 minutes away (dog friendly)."
    Mr Kerry Tyson, Huntingdon, Cambs
"Spacious accommodation, quiet location and a fully enclosed, safe garden for our dogs. The owner was friendly and helpful."
    Mrs Jennifer Turner, Alnwick,
"The Power House was ideal for our large family, with 2 fully fitted kitchens making catering and clearing up easy."
Mr Ian Noon, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire
"It was a lovely big house, well suited for our party of 12. The table which turned into a snooker table was an excellent idea! It was nice having the choice of two rooms to sit in. There was also ample private parking for all our vehicles."
    Miss Emma Stewart, Carlisle, Cumbria
"The Power House was the perfect size for our family holiday. We booked it for my Dads 50th as a surprise and it exceeded all expectations. Everybody had their own space and the sitting rooms were more than big enough for us all to enjoy a few drinks together. The pool table was a hit with the kids and the grown ups!"
