"We stayed here as a special weekend it was filthy the cooker microwave covered in splattered food fridge covered in thick mould there was a used condom under the bed and something wrapped in toilet paper in downstairs toilet and the lounge had food all over the floor and wen we moved the couch it was terrible and the table covered in stains i had to vaccum upstairs the bath moved wen you got in a disaster waiting to happen the owner needs to sort this property out."

"Good quiet location. Could do with a repaint. Facilities good. No iron"

"Very convenient location with everything you might need for a family trip away ( or trip away with friends). The house was a bit past its best, and had a few 'Heath Robinson' repairs, but had all the equipment we needed. It was warm and comfortable and ideally situated for walking round the Peaks."

"We had a great break.loved the area and the cottage was fine for out purposes"

"Wish I had read previous reviews before booking as they reflect the standard of the property. Although in a lovely location with a couple of good pubs, walks etc the house needs a thorough overhaul. Lots of cracked scuffed walls, missing handles on kitchen cupboards, extremely uncomfortable sofas, TV with distorted sound, mould around the bath and soot or something all over the walls in the downstairs toilet where the boiler is and the catch on the front door did not work so you had to lock yourself in. These are just some of the issues. Although it doesn't advertise WiFi I don't know many places that don't have it these days and would have been useful for looking up information about the area. Also there was not a visitors book so we had no info on the house including emergency info ( we did text the owner but no reply). The garden is tiny for a family style house so nowhere for the little ones to safely run around."

"Merry cottage is in a good location for most peak district activities and is generally comfortable but when you leave your comfortable house for a holiday to relax, having the comfort to do so is important in my view. The property is average in our opinion. The downstairs loo has soot on the ceiling and needs painting but also pointed to concerns about the oil boiler. i would suggest this is redecorated and sorted out asap. The overall condition is ok but the property needs redecorating downstairs, and the sofa is uncomfortable. The garden is small but ok. It could be better arranged with a couple more chairs. The bedrooms are comfortable but the fire doors need doorstops. The bathroom needs renewing due to a recent bath leak and the shower hose leaks.I left a personal note for the owners on leaving because We felt strongly that some of these improvements could be made quite easily. We haven't received a reply personally but still hope to do so even though we have now made a public review. The property was acceptable as we booked late but we won't repeat out business unfortunately."

"Merry cottage was fine for 2 night stay but the cottage does need some tlc and once that is done it will be a great cottage in good location for walking cycling and sightseeing"

"Had a great time. 6 adults plus a dog. Nice walk along the Manifold Way. Interesting evening in the local pub. Cottage was fine. Needed a few light bulbs and some light maintenance, but it was clean and pleasant. Bargain price and lovely area."

"Cottage was well equipped in a decent location with pub and shop a short walk away and the beautiful manifold valley close by. Modern house without much character and no welcome pack, no visitors book no instructions on appliances or rubbish collection and no contact on arrival from owner. Cleaning was just ok on arrival, think there was a leak under bath but it didn't affect our stay. Garden space very limited, 2 seats around a bistro table and no space for anything else. Lounge sofas very uncomfortable, felt like there was a cricket ball stored in the seat cushions. Plus points were spacious inside, nice loft conversion, lovely big fridge freezer, loads of cupboard space, decent eating space, downstairs loo, parking for 2 cars on drive, quiet road with quick access to playing field. We had a nice holiday here and the pride was right for the accommodation."

"We had a fantastic time at Merry Cottage. The house is spacious and well equipped and is in a perfect location for long walks around with the dog. The park is almost outside the door and very convenient if you are taking a pet. It is a quiet residential village and there is no cashpoint for several miles, but Cottage Kitchen, the Olde Red Lion Pub and a small village shop are all within a walk. We hope to return."

"The cottage was warm with modern furniture, location quiet with good walks from the door. Unfortunately the cottage was not clean with accumulation of dirt/dust in all rooms. The decoration was tired."
    Martin
"Disappointing. Superficially clean but lacked attention to core detail e.g. only one teatowel provided, only half a toilet roll in each and had to move sheets to other! Large tv stored in hallway. Rubbish bin outside had notice from Council saying that they would not empty as black sacks and recycling inside. Owners only provide black sacks! No general information about use of cottage."

"We enjoyed our stay at Merry Cottage. Essentials were provided which saved us having to buy cleaning products. We took our son's dog and felt the cottage was ideal as there were hard floor coverings which were easy to clean. We all enjoyed visiting Ashbourne and had a lovely walk around Dovedale. Whilst Waterhouses is only a small place, there were lots of lovely pubs near by and Marks and Spencer food store at nearby Ashbourne."

"The cottage is in a good location within driving distance of some lovely places, in particular Dovedale. The cottage is of a good size for 6 people and the rooms are relatively spacious. However the main problem for us was the cleanliness of the property, in particular the kitchen and bathroom. We had to spend a few hours cleaning the kitchen before we could use it as the microwave, hob, sink and surfaces were in no fit state to be used! The microwave and oven in particular we're disgusting, so we had to forgo using the oven and clean the microwave out fully. The bathroom has carpet on the floor and in general smells quite damp and musty. The rest of the house was in an adequate state. I expected a higher quality for that price."

"The cottage itself was lovely, although the television didnt work properly, the location felt very isolating with only one small shop down the road which was rarely open,we had to drive almost every where,it would have better if we only stayed a couple of nights.although it was a small distance to alton towers which was the main reason for holiday, which was good."
