And once inside, the small living room space is the best of the four areas, with a comfortable mini-settee, a modern, suitably sized TV, and some well-thought-out lighting. However, it wasn’t long before problems started to make themselves evident. I tried to get a bath soon after I arrived and managed to fill three or four lukewarm inches before the hot water ran out. I rang the owner to ask if there was anything I could do for the rest of the week to ensure I’d have enough, and her response was less than helpful: comments included “I don’t know what I can do, I’m five hundred miles away” (she’d gone away on holiday, apparently without leaving anyone to look after the property) and “no-one else has complained” – not that I had complained, just asked a polite question. I don’t recall exactly how we left things, but I never heard from her again, and barring the last night when there was again barely any hot water, managed to muddle through by topping up the bath from the kettle. Things continued to go downhill from there: aside from the living area, everywhere had its issues. In the bathroom, the toilet seat had come loose, there was unrepaired damage to the bath, and for some reason the blind had been ripped out but the fixings left to go rusty, which looked awful. In the kitchen, the fridge light seemed to work at random, the oven was missing half its buttons – meaning the timer was unusable - and there was nowhere to store anything, which made even preparing simple meals in the tiny space a chore. But the most frustrating problem became apparent on the first night, when I discovered that the owner had seen fit to put the lightest of summer quilts and a thin throw on the bed in the middle of October and to not leave any additional bedding that I could find. I was far too cold until the heating came on and then too warm for the rest of the night – something I could probably have fixed if the thermostat had been working properly, but the display was barely readable and I felt it was better to leave it alone than to risk losing the heating altogether. Adding to all that, there were a couple of safety issues that I’m shocked Sykes would turn a blind eye to. The smoke alarm had been removed, leaving just the fitting, and on the first night I got back after dark, I discovered that the outside light didn’t work, which was especially dangerous given how isolated the property is and the fact that there’s no light switch near the doors. Oh, and there’s no WiFi. At least I assumed there was no WiFi; Bretton Mount’s the only place I’ve stayed where the owner didn’t provide a folder with useful information about the property, and all there was in its place was a couple of passive-aggressive notes about what not to do while there. In the end, I was so disappointed with my stay – not to mention tired out from a week without a single decent night’s sleep – that I raised a complaint through Sykes. Perhaps needless to say, the owner wasn’t sympathetic and couldn’t even muster an apology. My impression is that she’s lost interest in keeping the property to a decent standard and doesn’t care whether her customers enjoy their time there so long as she gets paid. As such, although the place has its charms and could hardly be better placed for a walking holiday, I’d recommend thinking carefully before booking, and definitely be ready to take your own bedding and anything else you think you might need.

The kitchen is compact but has what you need to cook if you don’t want to eat out. The host is very friendly and we were even provided with fresh strawberries from her own garden. The view from the garden is spectacular and so peaceful to sit and gaze out over the valley below. Would definitely return.
