About this property

A charming 19th century converted chapel for two people situated right in the centre of Wirksworth. The Retreat is a small but light and welcoming room with a wonderful airy space and cast-iron, renaissance-style glass windows looking out across the cemetery to farmhouses which dot the slopes of the hillside beyond. You enter through a beautiful, slate grey arched door, where there is a double bed within a cosy living area with kitchen, dining and sitting area and under-floor heating for your convenience. The shower room is separate with washbasin, water closet and homely details such as a wooden, gothic church mirror. This detached property is in the middle of a Baptist cemetery, which is rarely visited, set back from the road, making this a very quiet and atmospheric place for a relaxing break. There is outdoor seating at the rear of the building within the graveyard itself, with stunning views of the distant landscape, a very peaceful and tranquil spot to sit and reflect. Formally desolate, the Retreat has been saved from ruin and refurbished as an atmospheric holiday let. It is a 200-year-old, Grade II listed building with lots of well thought out, quaint details within, ideal for a couple to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While there are lots of obvious Peak District attractions within an hour's drive of Wirksworth, walkers will be more than happy with the scenery and trails on offer right on the doorstep. The 18-mile High Peak trail passes right by the town and there is a heritage steam railway a few minutes’ walk away, this cottage is ideal for those looking to explore and indulge in ancient medieval history, Wirksworth's unspoilt town has to offer.

Wirksworth is a small, charming market town situated just a few miles from Matlock, on the edge of The Peak District. Wirksworth is full of character with many buildings of architectural interest, including its magnificent parish church. Independent shops sit alongside the deli, butchers and bakers with a strong local food ethic. Visitors will enjoy exploring the ancient “jitties” and courtyards of the Puzzle Gardens, along with the Heritage Centre and the delightful surrounding countryside including nearby Carsington Water, Black Rocks and the High Peak Trail. Rock climbing and cycling can be enjoyed here at every level, and there is fantastic walking all around. Well Dressing is unique to Derbyshire, and Wirksworth combines this tradition with a lively carnival in May. There is also an annual Arts festival with an amazing Art & Architecture Trail in September, showcasing contemporary art and international performers of every kind. With an art deco independent cinema and a range of places to eat there is plenty to entertain. The town offers a leisure centre with a climbing wall and a small trainer swimming pool, The Eco Centre, The National Stone Centre and the Mount Cook Adventure Centre. The weekly market and monthly farmers' market provide local produce and crafts. Beautiful Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are within easy reach, as well as Matlock Bath, with its spectacular cable car, the heritage Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and Gulliver's Kingdom. Only two miles away, the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site in Cromford is not to be missed. In all, Wirksworth is a great location for a varied holiday.
