About this property

Markeygate Cottages are really special. These lovely 17 century 'listed' cottages, recently renovated to a high standard, are set within the peaceful courtyard of Markeygate House which is the oldest house in Tideswell. The House, which dates from the 14 century, is steeped in village history. Originally the Market Place alehouse, it then went on to be a tailors, silk weavers, post office and butchers before returning to the super house and holiday cottages that are there today.

Markeygate is in a jumble of cottages in the midst of Tideswell. Take an early morning stroll to get some traditional oatcakes for breakfast. Have a daytime wander around the village exploring the little alleyways, 'real' village shops and the 'Cathedral of the Peak' parish church. Start the evening with a bottle of wine in the quiet cottage courtyard. Put all this together and you realise that you have found somewhere unique. Quality cottages, a super setting in one of Derbyshire's best villages, and glorious Peak District countryside all around.

If the cottages and village are something to talk about, you will never forget the surrounding scenery. Have a terrific walk across the tops on the Limestone Way. Follow the magnificent Monsal Trail down to the mellow market town of Bakewell. Millers Dale with the river Wye splashing over the waterfalls is absolutely wonderful. Don't forget the excellent food and open fires at the Red Lion in nearby Litton.

On lazier days you might like to visit Chatsworth House or Haddon Hall, the Derwent Valley Dams, Victorian Buxton and the plague village of Eyam. Save some time for Matlock Bath's little Switzerland gorge and cable cars, Carsington Water's super adventures, Chapel's Chestnut Owl and Otter Sanctuary, Bolsover's brilliant castle and Alton Towers. Make sure you get back in time to sample Tideswell's nightlife. Try a pint or two in the village pubs which are literally a stagger away. Savour the last glass in the cottage courtyard under a night sky filled with stars !

A large and attractive lounge, overlooking the courtyard, with a comfortable suite including a single sofa bed, gas log effect stove, T.V., DVD, Wi-Fi and stereo.  A fully fitted dining kitchen with hob, oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, stereo and access to a washing machine, tumble dryer and extra fridge/freezer space. A lovely double bedroom with pine furniture. An adjoining bathroom with bath/shower over and W.C. An equally attractive downstairs twin bedroom with ensuite shower room with W.C.

In both cottages linen and towels are provided. Central heating and power are included. A cot and high chair can be requested. Each cottage has its own stone flagged patio with furniture. Outside table tennis is available. Parking is on the lanes in the village. There is ample storage for bikes. Pets are allowed by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted. Access for people with disabilities may be difficult. Bookings are from Friday to Friday.

Short breaks are available throughout the year (excluding Xmas & New Year).
