    About this property

Set within landscaped grounds, this wonderful property offers spacious, grand and well-planned accommodation for an experience to be remembered.
Lumsdale House was built by the local mill owner in 1970 in the National Heritage listed conservation area in the heart of the Lumsdale Valley. It lies on the edge of Matlock, which is full of historical interest and natural beauty. Approached by electric gates and a gravelled driveway leading to a large turning circle, this beautiful detached property enjoys views over stunning landscaped gardens, with large ponds and various seating areas. The garden has its Joseph Paxton trademark features and has been given a whole new lease of life by the owner who is a botanical garden designer. There are various seating and dining areas and a sweeping lawn leading to a top pond which cascades into the main pond with views towards Tansley. The property itself is entered by a spacious reception hall with its original mouldings, ceiling rose, coving and oak-clad pillars either side. Guests have the choice of a drawing room or living room which has a wood-burning stove in the original stone fireplace and French doors to both sides one leading to the enclosed decking area and another set into the fabulous orangery. The orangery boasts a York flagstone floor with olive trees, a water feature, original vines and a stove, and makes a perfect place in which to enjoy a relaxing evening drink.
Within the property the breakfast kitchen is fully equipped and even has its own temperature controlled wine store and matching fridge/freezer with integrated water/ice machine. A separate study and drawing room, four large bedrooms, single bedroom and en-suites with roll-top, freestanding claw-foot baths make this property the ideal retreat to spend time at whilst enjoying the wonderful sights of the Peak District.
Lumsdale House’s fantastic location makes it only a few minutes’ drive from the spectacular Peak District National Park and the popular towns of Matlock and Matlock Bath. Chatsworth House, and Bakewell with its famous pudding shop, are close by. No visit to Lumsdale would be complete without a walk in the adjacent wooded gorge offering outstanding natural beauty, including a stunning waterfall (which can be faintly heard from the house) and an ancient water mill. All in all, this property makes a fantastic holiday location to escape to at any time of year. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

"Had a 3 night stay here to celebrate my mothers 80th Birthday. 9 of us stayed, bed were very comfortable rooms a lovely size.Cooking equipment in kitchen needs sorting ,some of it in a bad way needs throwing out and replacing. Lots of items in the kitchen not required throw out and put in extra plates and cutlery.Having said all this would go back again"

"Lumsdale House was the perfect setting for a weekend away with friends. Beautiful, secluded location. Enormous property, totally exceeded our expectations. Well equipped, gorgeous fixtures and fittings, outstanding value for money. We had a fabulous time, would definitely recommend."

"This was a great venue for a big group as there is so much space! All the rooms are beautiful and the dining room was perfect for our murder mystery evening. We were very comfortable here. The gardens are lovely too and a great location tucked away but a quick drive into Matlock for everything you need. Loved the waterfall over the road. WiFi struggles with a lot of people on it and doesn’t reach round the house very well but that’s to be expected with a big old house like that. My only negative is with regard to the things like glasses and cups etc. Although there was enough for everyone, it was all very miss matched so hard to give everyone the same thing e.g champagne flutes, tumblers and if having a dinner party there isn’t enough cultlery for starter and main, so had to make do. I would love to go back!"

"Beautiful old house, in stunning natural scenery - such a shame it is not maintained properly!(broken door handles, dirty & sticky kitchen shelves, thick layer of dust under all the beds) and that the care-taker in charge was less than helpful. WiFi signal is very poor - which would be OK, but there's no mobile reception down there. The beds' layout is rather awkward too: one of the single beds is in a corridor, while a huge walk-in closet is taking up what could be another room (completely useless for a holiday let)..."

"Excellent, beautiful, very spacious and homely accommodation. Very close to the town centre and all attractions. Lovely bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms, living roons, dining room and play room. Absolutely beautiful garden with lots of features. The owner was extremely helpful and accommodating and always available to answer any questions. This was our best holiday we have ever had. Many thanks."

"We were a group of friends who hired the house for the weekend. We absolutely loved it and would return. Both the owner and caretaker were really helpful and informative in advance and during our stay and the caretaker was available if we needed anything and was happy to help. The house itself was stunning. There was plenty of room for 10 of us though note one of the bedrooms is a single soon so we had to pull a single mattress from another room so 2 people could sleep in it. The garden was great. There were lots of board games to play and the house was well equipped for groups. We were blessed with the weather so spent most of our time outside but would love to return in winter as am sure it will be equally impressive then. The only thing I would change is that I wish we booked for 3 rather than 2 nights."

"Loved the house! So much space to enjoy and amazing grounds. Beautiful walk through Lumsdale on the doorstep. Rooms and bathrooms are huge."

"Spent a wonderful weekend for my birthday at Lumsdale House. The house is lovely with comfy beds, soft fluffy towels and a well equipped kitchen, the gate keeper had even left a bottle of wine and a bottle of champagne for us in the fridge !The gardens were a delight and the children loved exploring all the little nooks and crannies, and the waterfall across the lane was spectacular. We all would have loved to stay longer because we enjoyed it so much and would definitely recommend the property."

"We had a lovely weekend at Lumsdale House. We were 6 adults and 3 children. It was really well equipped with just about everything you could possibly need - the owners had thought of everything! The rooms were huge and there was so much space downstairs. We ate in both nights making full use of the well equipped kitchen and great big dining room. The showers were fantastic (but didn't work so well when someone else was having a shower in another bathroom at the same time!). The only thing that would have improved our weekend was a bit more sunshine and some work on the circular garden immediately outside the house! The garden was beautiful but was a bit let down by the circular garden being full of weeds and overgrown - it would have been stunning with a bit of work. We would definitely go back again if the opportunity arose."

"Wonderful location and a great house. It was just we wanted as a family. The waterfalls and walks along the ridge were fantastic. The house was clean and warm with loads of space for everyone. 3 bathrooms was great and although one is accessed though the single room it was never a problem. The owner was great with local information and called to see that everything was ok. Recommended."

"Fabulous house and fantastic location. We stayed in a cold March but the house was so warm and welcoming. Communication with the owner was really easy and flexible with timings etc. You can hear Lumsdale waterfall from the house and walking alongside it were so easy , accessible and enjoyable. Can’t wait to return. Thank you for letting us have use of this amazing house."

"An amazing house, perfect spot for our weekend holiday. Had a great time sitting around the kitchen island or by the fire. Beds were comfortable. We had so much snow over the weekend so could not drive back on Sunday. We were let to stay an extra night. Thank you so much for this. Definitely will recommend to our friends and family ! See you next time !"

"a great place to stay, not worried about local amenities, that's why we booked it, all close enough if you need, just plan for your stay as we did.Great house, loads of room."

"Lumsdale House is beautiful, large with lots of rooms to spread out, but still cosy. Really well appointed with everything you need, including large soft towels. We had a great girls weekend here, did local walks, visited a few pubs and back to sit in front of the fire with a glass of wine. Great house for a get together and sure the garden and conservatory would be lovely in the summer. The owner is really helpful and we all said we would definitely recommend staying here and visit again."
