  • . Lumsdale House was built by the local mill owner in 1970 in the National Heritage listed conservation area in the heart of the Lumsdale Valley. It lies on the edge of Matlock, which is full of historical interest and natural beauty. Approached by electric gates and a gravelled driveway leading to a large turning circle, this beautiful detached property enjoys views over stunning landscaped gardens, with large ponds and various seating areas. The garden has its Joseph Paxton trademark features and has been given a whole new lease of life by the owner who is a botanical garden designer. There are various seating and dining areas and a sweeping lawn leading to a top pond which cascades into the main pond with views towards Tansley. The property itself is entered by a spacious reception hall with its original mouldings, ceiling rose, coving and oak-clad pillars either side. Guests have the choice of a drawing room or living room which has a wood-burning stove in the original stone fireplace and French doors to both sides one leading to the enclosed decking area and another set into the fabulous orangery. The orangery boasts a York flagstone floor with olive trees, a water feature, original vines and a stove, and makes a perfect place in which to enjoy a relaxing evening drink.
Within the property the breakfast kitchen is fully equipped and even has its own temperature controlled wine store and matching fridge/freezer with integrated water/ice machine. A separate study and drawing room, four large bedrooms, single bedroom and en-suites with roll-top, freestanding claw-foot baths make this property the ideal retreat to spend time at whilst enjoying the wonderful sights of the Peak District.
Lumsdale House’s fantastic location makes it only a few minutes’ drive from the spectacular Peak District National Park and the popular towns of Matlock and Matlock Bath. Chatsworth House, and Bakewell with its famous pudding shop, are close by. No visit to Lumsdale would be complete without a walk in the adjacent wooded gorge offering outstanding natural beauty, including a stunning waterfall (which can be faintly heard from the house) and an ancient water mill. All in all, this property makes a fantastic holiday location to escape to at any time of year. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

"A brilliant setting with an amazing house which the whole family, ten of us enjoyed thoroughly. The only negative was that we only had a long weekend!Would recommend this to any family or group."

"A beautiful large house perfect for a celebration, the property does however need some TLC.Lots of towels and a well equipped kitchen. We had a fabulous weekend."

"Lovely house & grounds, perfect location to celebrate birthday"
    Sinead ‐ 11 Jul 2019
"We had a fantastic time at Lumsdale House. The pictures do not do justice as to quite how spacious the house is and our group of 9 was very comfortable. Everyone was so in awe of the house when they arrived and the beautiful sunshine that we had made it look like a picture postcard. We had everything that we needed and such an easy check-in. Will certainly recommend as a beautiful and very affordable place for a group to stay."

"Nice location. however, the house was not clean. The furniture was mismatched and of very low quality. The appliances were dirty and some were broken."

"Amazing place, beautifully kept and very comfortable.Thank you for sharing your amazing home."

"A gorgeous big house. It was perfect for a weekend gathering of university friends and their expanding families! Beautiful surroundings. Well equipped and a lovely welcome pack. Thank you."
    Anne ‐ 11 Mar 2019
"Lumsdale House is a beautiful house in a lovely location. On the whole the property was well equipped and clean. Towels, bedding, kitchen and bathrooms were spotless but some carpets and upholstery were less so and some of the pans and glasses needed a wash before use. Some minor irritations e.g. no coffee maker of any sort, no kitchen roll or clothes detergent, CD player not working. The property is ideal for adults and the children loved the space and numerous rooms for hide-and-seek , but the uncarpeted stairs and unfenced ponds are not child friendly. Parents can obviously monitor these dangers but we were not impressed to discover by accident that the boat house ground-level windows pushed open very easily and gave onto a significant and dangerous drop. It is a shame that these shortcomings took the edge off an otherwise excellent experience. Both the house and surroundings are stunning and we would have been happy to stay longer."
    Anne ‐ 25 Feb 2019
"Fantastic house well equipped. Plenty of space for our family gathering to celebrate a 60th birthday. Lovely secluded spot but within 5 minutes drive of local amenities."
    Jill ‐ 20 Feb 2019
"We stayed February 2019. We enjoyed a long weekend with family and we had a fantastic time. The house is superb and very well equipped.Location is fabulous. No complaints at all. Highly recommended."
    Michelle ‐ 22 Jan 2019
    "Lively birthday celebration setting"
    Heather ‐ 8 Jan 2019
"The location of the house was amazing, very easy to get into Matlock while also being quiet and private. The house was huge and accommodated 9 to sleep (with a further 5 visiting for lunch) very comfortably. There was plenty of equipment to cook for everyone and we all fit in the kitchen and could also sit around the lovely dining table. The only negatives were the tiny TV, patchy WiFi and that some of the sofas were very uncomfortable. These things in no way ruined our time in the house, it's just a shame when everything else was so good."
    Caroline ‐ 13 Nov 2018
"Had a 3 night stay here to celebrate my mothers 80th Birthday. 9 of us stayed, bed were very comfortable rooms a lovely size.Cooking equipment in kitchen needs sorting ,some of it in a bad way needs throwing out and replacing. Lots of items in the kitchen not required throw out and put in extra plates and cutlery.Having said all this would go back again"
