    About this property

Otterburn 5 miles. Set in the small village of Rochester in the heart of the Northumberland National Park, is this charming stone property, Petty Knowes Cottage. The property has been renovated to a high standard, whilst still managing to retain some original stone walls in the snug to add a wealth of character. Walk through to the open-plan kitchen/diner which has all the necessary appliances for rustling up some delicious meals and benefits from a washer/dryer so you don't have to bring your whole wardrobe with you during your trip. Gin lovers will delight in visiting this property's snug room which the owners have renovated into 'The Gin Room' and is the most characterful part of the cottage with its stone walls and sheepskin day bed. Once the evening draws to a close, retire to the king-size bedroom which has its own multi fuel stove for those colder evenings, as well as a TV so you don't have to move to watch your favourite morning shows whilst relaxing in the soft Egyptian cotton bedding. There is a bathroom with the choice of a bath or shower over and benefitting from Egyptian cotton towels and underfloor heating. To the rear of the cottage is a private decking area which comes with outdoor furniture so you can dine alfresco or simply enjoy a refreshing drink whilst watching the sunset. Guests are also welcome to use the owner’s hot tub during their stay, adding a spot of luxury to your romantic getaway. Situated in the heart of the Northumberland National Park, you can explore the rolling countryside either by walking or hiking, perfect to take you dogs along to stretch their legs. This area is also popular for cyclists and is an easy drive to Hadrian's Wall and Kielder Forest. Make sure you get involved with some watersporting activities at any one of the nearby lakes and rivers. The village of Bellingham comes with its very own golf course, ideal for beginners and professionals alike. Petty Knowes Cottage is an excellent choice for a relaxing holiday any time of the year.

"The weather was poor and I think it would be helpful to emphasise that the property can be difficult to access in icy weather. We could not get our car up the hill track to the cottage and had to park 400 metres away. Also they have a lovely "gin snug" within the cottage but there are no gin glasses or means to produce ice in the cottage. That would be an improvement. However overall we enjoyed or stay. The cottage is lovely and the location and surrounding countryside is beautiful."

The cottage itself is beautifully furnished and so clean. It has everything you need and feels like a home away from home. Gordon and Joanne were so nice and always happy to help, lovely hosts. A truly special place, we would love to return."

The hot tub was easy to work and a very relaxing; with lovely views across the rolling countryside. The resident cats are also cute....so indulge yourself and chill out there!"

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the owners were very friendly and keen to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. We loved evenings in front of the open fire after a relaxing soak in the hot tub. The gin snug was a lovely, unusual addition and a peaceful place to curl up with a book and a G&T. Never having visited Northumberland before, we were taken aback by the stunning scenery on our sightseeing travels. There's so much to see and do in the area. We would definitely like to come back!"

" Very comfortable. Loved the little secret snug/ gin room ( which I had forgotten about- but then my husband discovered it. ) Everything was perfect. Loved the location- so quiet, and loved seeing the lambs and sheep that surrounded the property. Lovely places to walk literally on your doorstep- which Gordon told us about. Joanne and Gordon were just wonderful hosts - always going the extra mile to make their guests truly welcome. Loved the hot tub and the dark skies. Can’t recommend enough. Just to be aware- Nearest shop is in the next village. No big supermarket nearby and also no Petrol stations in the immediate vicinity. Make sure you have plenty of fuel. Dawn & Steve "

" Had a fantastic break here (in strange times) and had lovely walks, visited great castle and lovely beaches, also able to pop to Scotland for lunch. Loved the hot tub too, watching sun sets and the stars whenever we wanted. Highly recommended! Would like to mention that does make it incredibly difficult to make contact. " We particularly enjoyed listening to music in the evening - with a glass of wine or two- in the 'secret', cosy snug. And the hot tub, with amazing views, was one of the best we've used. Joanne and Gordon were the perfect hosts, extremely friendly, helpful and informative, yet unobtrusive. What made the stay even more perfect was the that the cottage is in an area steeped in history. Not only is it sitting just outside the footprint of a Roman auxiliary fort, there's also a Roman cremation burial ground almost at the bottom of the garden! We'll definitely be returning! "

" Everything is good quality and there is enough of what you need. I have been to a lot of places with log fires, this was the first where I didn't have to worry about buying extra logs or coal, it's all supplied. The owners live in the adjoining house, it was a bit odd that the hot tub was in their bit but after a chat we were made to feel very welcome to use it at any time of night. It is actually very private and secluded so no issues. The owners are very friendly, we felt anything would be sorted if needed. They are a credit. The weather was awful yet we had the most relaxing stay. It says something about a place when it is like that. "
