Cullercoats, a populated peninsula on the North East coast, lies midway between Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. When the village was founded in 1539, fishing and a local coal mining pit were the primary sources of income, as well as a port that exported salt and coal. Victorian terraces and preserved fishermen's cottages line Simpson Street in the village, which has some of the most interesting architecture in the area. American artist Winslow Home was a "Cullercoats Colony" member who wrote a popular song about the area called "The Cullercoats Fish Lass" in 1862.

Lovely welcome, helpful local information, beautifully decorated, so comfy too. Owners were responsive to our queries. Being February and a cold week we were toasty warm and extremely envious of how well the central heating works compared to ours! Couldn’t fault Cowrie Cottage. So many lovely eateries bars and cares nearby. Near to the beach and the Metro for travelling to Newcastle and around the area. So overall a big fat 11/10!

The agency feels impersonal and uncaring, I will book through a different route next time

Well equipped kitchen, nice bathroom and lovely comfy bed. Great to relax in front of the woodburning stove with a glass of wine after a long day walking.
