For the perfect peaceful, relaxing holiday, with access to some excellent walks and cycle rides right from the gate, Throstle Hall Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the Ribble Valley and Yorkshire Dales, and, of course, Pendle Hill and the surrounding countryside. There are few properties in this area with such a superb outlook over the Ribble Valley and Yorkshire Dales. This detached cottage is located in farmland at Brownlow Farm in Twiston, just 1½ miles from the village of Barley, and just a bit further to the delightful village of Downham, where time has stood still. From the cottage, you can see the magnificent peaks of Pen-Y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, as well as the Trough and Forest of Bowland.
Lovingly renovated into a four bedroom holiday home, this ’upside down’ house offers some surprises! The cottage is accessed via a steep private unmade farm track. Gates must be closed and care is required on approach and departure. It has a terraced garden and a paved patio area for enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the surroundings. No traffic noises or street lights here! The property further benefits from access to 15 acres of private farmland, where the owners have brought the fields back into productivity and planted over 4500 hedgerow and 400 trees to encourage wildlife and birds. The town of Clitheroe is just 5 miles away, dominated by its castle perched high above the town, and is rich in independent shops, eateries, bars and a popular brewery. Supermarkets can be found at Clitheroe and Barrowford. Beach 30 miles. Shops 3 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

"The house was very spacious and in the most beautiful location with extraordinary views. Ideal if you have a dog, with flagstones and wood floors! The house looked a bit tired in terms of decor and the kitchen could have been cleaner - it was a bit grubby. It could all do with a bit of an upgrade because it has so much potential. (Witten June 2019)Following my review, I was contacted by the owner who was concerned about my comments about cleanliness and the tired nature of the decor. It seems that there had been a gap in the care-taking of the house which has now been remedied. The owner has also replaced some of the kitchen equipment and re-painted the living areas. I was very impressed with the concern and care taken by the owner and the speed with which she responded. Our exchanges were very friendly. As a consequence, I have now upgraded my ratings for cleanliness (September, 2019)We had a wonderful week at Throstle Hall and were very comfortable. I would strongly recommend it."

"The house is beautifully renovated with some lovely features such as stone floors, fireplaces and the dove stones on the outside. The temperature was balanced even though we had a warm and sunny start to our week and ending very stormy. The kitchen is well equipped (I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed!) There are enough plates, bowls, serving dishes, cups, glasses, cutlery, cooking utensils and pots and pans to cater for our family. Our group consisted of 7 adults and a baby and we fitted nicely around the huge dining table for a full roast dinner.High chair and a very good travel cot were provided and a huge array of suitable toys for our granddaughter. This was very much appreciated. The house is large enough to allow people to have space whilst also accommodating large groups to eat and play games (of which we had many!)The surrounding countryside is fabulous and the views from the house are amazing. There are some great walks starting at the house too.The drive down to the house on first go is daunting however, we quickly got used to it and found it to be part of the experience. It’s best to have one person walk up (or down) and open the gates because we found stopping half way was a little tricky. The dog loved the run down once we were out of the sheep field.I would definitely recommend this house and area. We visited Clitheroe, Holmes Mill, Skipton, Gawthorp Hall, Downham and Barley. Lots of walking, pubs and good food. We loved every moment and hope to return some day."

"We had a brilliant stay at Throstle Hall Cottage. Gorgeous views and location. The rooms are really comfortable and warm, and the living area is gorgeous. The pics don’t do it justice!"

"A lovely cottage that was really warm, comfortable and well equipped. The dog loved it and enjoyed a romp in the snow as a bonus. It's location is secluded and beautiful but the steep slop to the front door via 2 gates is a slight challenge for elderly guests. It is a drive away from any shop, so come stocked.I would say the noise from the lounge/kitchen really travels to all the bedrooms.Nevertheless, it was a great house to gather in and celebrate.Excellent communication from owner and local cottage manager."

"Lovely place. We spent Christmas their had all the family 8 adults, and 3 dogs, we had a lovely time, place is a bit isolated but that is what we liked about it."
