Foxdene Cottage is a well-appointed property in a beautiful, peaceful location with stunning views, offering spacious and comfortable accommodation. Guests appreciate the high standard of equipment and the homely feel, with special mention of the master bedroom's comfort. The surrounding areas provide ample opportunities for exploration and relaxation.
The cottage generally receives praise for its cleanliness, but there are some concerns about dust and a fusty smell upon arrival. The majority of guests found the property clean, though a few noted areas that could be improved, such as skirting boards and beams.
The location is highly praised for its tranquility, beautiful views, and proximity to local attractions. It is described as peaceful and perfect for a rural escape, with easy access to the Lakes and nearby towns.
Comfort is well-regarded, especially the king-size bed and underfloor heating. However, some guests found the lounge seating and the master bedroom bed uncomfortable, which affects the score.
Facilities are generally good, with a well-equipped kitchen and good bedroom amenities. However, there are several mentions of issues with heating, hot water, and Wi-Fi, as well as maintenance concerns like loose steps and non-functional items.
While some guests mentioned the lack of a welcome pack and the provision of amenities like logs for the hot tub, there is not enough consistent information about gifts or thoughtful touches to accurately score this category.
Dating back to the 17th century, Foxdene Cottage is a magical retreat in an equally wonderful setting. Backing onto woodland and with views over the stunning Lyth Valley, this is paradise for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The property is beautifully decorated throughout and having two gorgeous bedrooms with private bathrooms it makes a superb choice for two couples sharing.
The cottage is positioned at the end of a long leafy driveway and is entered through a stable door leading into a slate floored hallway. The delightful kitchen is a real treat with its granite worktops, large Belfast sink and Rangemaster stove. In turn, it leads into the light and airy conservatory with access to the sun terrace. The sitting room manages to be both generous and cosy. Sublimely comfortable chairs and sofa are arranged around the feature fireplace with welcoming wood burning stove. The original oak beams have been carefully preserved, and a stylish dining area is somewhere guests will enjoy long, lively conversations over a delicious evening meal.
We have a Scandinavian Hot Tub for 6 people. Bathe in our large family tub and enjoy the calming experience whilst taking in stunning views towards Gummers How. We do not use any water treatment chemicals so it’s friendly to the environment and a kinder, softer bathing experience. We clean the tub and refill the tub every week and ask you to change the water each time you use it. The tub is wood fired and takes up to 3 hours to reach bathing temperature. Bags of Kiln dried logs are stored next to the tub at the cost of £10.00 per bag.
The Lyth Valley is somewhat of a hidden gem and lies to the east of Lake Windermere, and twenty five minutes from Bowness. The area is peppered with lovely local pubs, many serving top notch food and fine local ales. Worth a special mention are the Mason’s Arms at Strawberry Bank and The Punchbowl at Crosthwaite. Make the drive to Bowness and you will find plenty of entertainment. The quirky Royalty Cinema, Old Laundry Theatre, a wide range of bars and restaurants and supermarkets should you wish to fill the fridge with delicious local produce.
Underbarrow is a quiet, pretty Lakeland village close to the historic market town of Kendal and within reach of the wonderful Lake Windermere. The village has a pub and is ideally placed for exploring southern Lakeland and the Lake District National Park. Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall, both with fine gardens, are nearby, and Kendal has much to offer in terms of shopping and is quite lively culturally, thanks to the Brewery Arts Centre and the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Museum, which is widely recognised as one of the best in the region. Also worth a visit is the ruin of Kendal Castle, which was formerly the home of Katherine Parr, and there’s plenty to see and do with Grange-over-Sands, Cartmel, Ulverton, Bowness, Ambleside and even the Yorkshire Dales National Park within driving distance. Underbarrow is a lovely base for exploring the area.

There is a nearby pub and a short drive into Windemere. There is quite a few rules for dogs staying at the property, which I wasn't aware of prior to booking. Would recommend making these aware - as the pups aren't allowed upstairs, on furniture, in the back garden, had to be leads - so felt like they weren't really allowed to be there. The cottage comes well stocked, and has stunning views.

Although we would recommend the property to anyone who wants a home from home feel to their holiday.
