    About this property

Smithy Cottage is at the end of a row of worker’s cottages that belong to the Bobbin Mill. The remains of the smithy can be found at the bottom of the garden which has been turned into a delightful place to relax. The garden to the side of the property leads down to Force Beck. From the front door there are plenty of walks to enjoy in the surrounding acres of broadleaf woodland and Grizedale Forest. Situated just one and a half miles from the Grizedale Forest Visitor’s Centre, guests can enjoy the great outdoors, be it cycling, walking or crossing the treetops on a high wire at Go Ape. The pretty village of Hawkshead is a mere five miles away where you will find a good selection of traditional shops and local pubs. Trout, pike and coarse fishing (licence required) can be enjoyed just outside the village on Esthwaite Water, home to 280 acres of fishing ground, perfect for all abilities.

"The cottage was well placed to visit local attractions but in a peaceful and quiet location. The garden was a bonus not shared by neighbouring cottages. The house was wonderfully warm with the Aga too. We would have liked more cooking equipment as we like to cook when we are away. We were disappointed by the support available as we spent over 24 hours without a functional fridge. We had to finish the fridge defrosting, using bath towels to clean up the mess and replace some food. The cottage owners did not respond to the South Lakes notification that we had a problem. We would still rent the cottage again though."

"A lovely cottage and would definitely stay again. Quite isolated in some ways but some good walks just outside door and not too far from windemere. Cottage was real gem"

"A lovely holiday cottage, clean, comfortable and away from any hustle and bustle. The only minus was the WiFi was hit and miss, which was a pain as it was our only form of communication, other than that an excellent place to stay, would come back again."

"Overall the cottage was very nice. The only slight criticisms were that the double bed was too springy making it an uncomfortable sleep as every movement by one person was transmitted to the other. Also, the cottage is very remote and there was no welcome pack such as milk, tea and coffee which could have been a problem."

"Lovely comfortable cottage, we would go back! Bear in mind there are no shops close by so take provisions if you are arriving late."

"Beautiful cottage, well placed as a base for travelling all directions. Will be rebooking as soon as we can!"

"Wonderful cottage very comfortable looks completely refurbished. Beds and bedding very comfortable and clean. I would stay there again and recommend it to other people."

"a lovely cottage beautifully furnished and appointed. If I had to make less than positive comment it would only be that parking is a little restrictive."

"Beautiful cottage, tastefully decorated and very comfortable with only two niggles that reduce the scores given. We had to take our recycling home with us because the owners had appropriated the recycling boxes for other purposes. As a recycling collection was made on the day we left, this was frustrating; it would seem sensible for a couple more recycling boxes to be ordered so that people didn't have to make the choice between throwing recycling in the bin (bad for the environment) or having to take it all home. The second niggle is that the kitchen was equipped with only the barest essentials. There is a dishwasher (hurray!) but we ran out of cutlery, and some crockery before it was full enough to run, so we were constantly removing stuff from the dishwasher to wash by hand. If you're just planing to eat breakfast and cook a very simple meal now and then, you're probably OK with the cookware, but we could have done with more as we go self-catering so we don't always have to eat out. There is one baking tray, one roasting tin and one large ovenproof casserole dish, plus a frying pan, and a small, medium and large saucepan. No serving dishes, salad bowl etc. - I don't see how you could cook a dinner and a pudding, for instance, or make something like a pasta bake. If you want more than that for cooking / serving food, then you need to bring it with you.Other than those two gripes, it was a lovely cottage, with the option to go for some very pretty walks straight out the door, and only a short drive from the South Lakes attractions. Improve the kitchen equipment and I'd give it ten out of ten."

"Wonderfully quiet location. Cottage was clean, with comfortable beds. Parking a bit tight, but manageable. Bike shed very useful, which also houses a separate freezer. Washing machine would have been nice, but not essential. Otherwise the cottage was well equipped for a week's stay. GPS a must for those not familiar with the area.Ideal for those loving nature and tranquillity. Look elsewhere if you're into neon lights, nightclubs and loud music."

"Lovely cottage. Great location to be able to visit all surrounding areas. Downside was garden was reached by a flight of very dangerous steps from the front of the cottage-very disappointing"

"We had a wonderful time at Smithy Cottage. Clean property in a very serene location. WiFi internet connectivity issue: just re-start the router."

"Absolutely amazing holiday and a beautiful cottage. Clean when we arrived and has modern features but kept that country cottage feel. The only thing for us was our boy suffers from severe eczema so need to vacuum everyday and there was no access to a vacuum cleaner. Would definatley stay here again."

"A beautiful cottage in a stunning location, perfect for exploring Windermere and surrounding area while staying away from the crowds. A few minor drawbacks; parking is very tight when all cottages are occupied, so take a small car & no laundry facilities meant that muddy clothes from walking, cycling & Go Ape had to be stored & washed once home If we had been staying longer than 4 nights this might have been a problem, but as it was we had taken plenty of spares so it didn't really detract from our stay. My 2 children (ages 10 & 14) loved the cottage & the area, we will be going back."

"Absolutely lovely cottage - pristine clean and beautiful decor. Only slight niggle was no board games or cards/jigsaws which in the wet Lake District is a must for a cottage!A great spot for visiting the South Lakes."

"Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Warm, comfortable, cosy and well equipped, the aga cooker in the kitchen ensures that the bathroom upstairs is always warm. There is a beautiful garden next to a river which would be lovely in summer - we visited during a cold February. The owners had left photocopies of walks from the cottage which were fantastic - we walked for hours during half term and scarcely saw another person. The pub in nearby Satterthwaite was good, with a warm welcome and decent food and Ulverston is 8 miles away for food shopping. The only slight criticism we had was the lack of a 'welcome pack' on arrival. We stay in a lot of cottages and have grown used to there being tea bags, milk, fuel for at least the first night's fire and even a bottle of wine and some biscuits on arrival. I would heartily recommend Smithy Cottage for a relaxing break but take your tea bags and milk as there are no local shops near by."

"all I would say is we did have a problem and it was sorted but there is no mobile reception there was an emergency number to phone but the land line in the cottage didn't work so we had to go and knock up neigbours for help and us their phone so that needs to be sorted no point having an emergency number if you've no way of contacting any oneSue"

"Excellent cottage. Very clean and spacious but able to keep that warm cosy feeling you want from a cottage. A bit further out in the country than we first thought but not a major issue. Information provided was very good and mostly things we had never heard about before. Bathroom got a big thumbs up from us all which is important especially with children. Kitchen fully equipped. Rural location was ideal for the country smell and feel, with a short walk and you were in the woods. Would definitely visit again."
