Mickleton has a pub and the small market town of Middleton-in-Teesdale, has a variety of shops and places to eat.  There is also a good selection of shops, pubs and tearooms in the market town of Barnard Castle, about 9 miles, which is also home to the Bowes Museum.  Eggleston Hall Gardens are also worth a look - 4 acres of winding paths, views of the fells, a stream and gardens specialising in unusual plants. There are good cycle routes and fishing on the river Tees is available with a permit, and also on Grassholme and Selset reservoirs.
