About this property

Situated moments away from the centre of the lively village of Stanhope ‘Capital of Weardale’ is the characterful, stone built Old Workhouse Cottage. Stanhope lies within the heart of superb walking country in the stunning North Pennines AONB and is within easy reach of a number of significant historical and cultural landmarks making this delightful cottage and ideal destination for a countryside getaway. Once forming part of the 19th Century Weardale Union Workhouse the property has been tastefully and sympathetically converted to provide comfortable, characterful accommodation which includes an open plan living, kitchen and dining area with original stone fireplace and log burner; the perfect place to unwind at the end of a busy day walking or sightseeing. Upstairs there is a spacious double bedroom with period, king size brass bed, ample storage and lovely views over the village and valley beyond. An equally spacious and bright bathroom completes the first-floor accommodation. Outside you will find a decked, south facing patio garden with table and chairs, perfect for an early morning breakfast or a relaxing glass of wine or two in the evening as you watch the sunset. If you do manage to tear yourself away from the comfort of this cosy retreat you will discover an interesting array or shops, pubs and cafes on your door step. In addition, Stanhope boasts an art gallery, visitor centre and the only outdoor swimming pool in Durham (open in the summer months). Close by is the historic city of Durham with its landmark cathedral, Bishop Auckland Castle- home of ‘Kynren’, the magnificent Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle and beautiful Ushaw College, one of Durham’s hidden jewels and steeped in history. Further afield you will find Hadrians Wall, the stunning Northumberland Coast and Holy Island. You will find Old Workhouse Cottage is a truly delightful place to stay at any time of year.

Stanhope is an ancient market town resting within the Wear Valley. On the high street you will find a superb selection of pubs, specialist food stores, coffee shops, art galleries, a heated outdoor swimming pool and riverside walks, plus the town is on the C2C cycle route. Could not fault it at all, beautiful and thoughful attention to detail, comfy bed, everything we needed in the kitchen, gorgeous log burner in the living room with all the comforts of home. Weather wasnt good except for one day when we drove into bishop auckland for some fresh air. Lovely and clean and sympathetic to the style of the cottage. This cottage was actually recommended by a friend and it certainly did not disappoint. Good base if you enjpy walking as there are lots of walks to be done in the area. Lovely little decked garden but because of the weather we didnt use but it will be lovely in the summer. Will definately return possibly in the summer. Owners had thought of everything. Parking right outside in a private road, only thing on the down side were the concrete steps up to the property as i was there with my 84 year old neighbour with very limited mobility but we managed ok but not accessible for anyone in a wheelchair. Brilliant peaceful holiday over Christmas which is what we wanted, very quiet and secluded but only a 2 minute walk from the pretty village of Stanhope...10 out of 10.....

Everything you need is there, and the bed was so comfortable. Highly recommend. The owners were extremely helpful, too.
