    About this property

With 9 en-suite bedrooms, each with TV, this Grade ll, 13th century detached stone tithe barn is ideal for touring and 2 miles from Chesil Beach.
Within 2 miles of the famous Chesil Beach and World Heritage Jurassic Coast and between West Bay and Portland Bill, this Grade II 13th-century stone tithe barn, situated in Litton Cheney on a working farm, has been restored and extended to provide excellent detached character accommodation for 19 guests, in this sought after part of West Dorset. It offers a great location for enjoying this holiday area, and boasts nine en-suite bedrooms (five doubles, one with an additional single, and four twins), each with TV, and a large kitchen, ideal for self catering with a large group. There is even the added benefit of a self-service bar, so you can keep your friends and family entertained throughout the evening. The original stone barn, now a very impressive vaulted and beamed living/dining room, comfortably accommodates eighteen. There is plenty of room for all; guests can relax and unwind in the large garden, the children can play in the games room equipped with pool table, there is fishing (by arrangement with the owner) in the 2-acre coarse fishing lake, or simply wander down to the village pub to wine and dine, or enjoy some glorious country walking.
Within a few minutes’ drive is Chesil Beach at Burton Bradstock which stretches for 17 miles from Portland to West Bay and is a unique shingle ridge and natural beauty spot. The pebbles on the beach are said to increase in size from east to west, the largest being at Portland where a centre for wind and kitesurfing can also be found. West Bexington and Abbotsbury are a short drive away with opportunities for swimming and fishing. Abbotsbury is home to the swannery which is a popular family attraction for holidaymakers and where visitors can walk amidst colonies of nesting mute swans in a natural wildlife habitat. Originally established by Benedictine monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury, the swannery was used to provide food for their banquets and has been featured in films including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The Abbotsbury Sub-tropical Gardens, which were established in the 1700s by the Countess of Ilchester, are another place of interest to visit. Magnolia and camelia collections are of particular note as well as rhododendrons and hydrangeas; a gift shop, restaurant and plant centre complete the facilities for a good day out. There is much to see and do in Dorset for families, especially at Weymouth, a short drive away, which offers many attractions including the Sea Life Museum, or visit Dorchester with its many attractions and shops. Further afield, family days out include Wool with its Tank Museum and Monkey World, or admire the natural arch of Durdle Door and the almost circular cove of Lulworth on the way to Wareham and the Isle of Purbeck. To the west one can see the magnificent World Heritage Coast and visit West Bay, Eype, Charmouth and of course the ever popular seaside resort of Lyme Regis, with its pretty harbour and Cobb. Shop 3 miles and pub 400 yards.

"Could not fault it in any way."

"Had a really good week, the old tithe barn was beautiful definitely love to return.Had a very comfortable stay and found the barn was tidy although it could have done with being abit cleaner (cob webs, dead flys)"

"A wonderful barn conversion - carried out to the highest standards with a superb living space 35 yards in overall length and 9 en-suite rooms. Unfortunately, current operating standards are not as high and maintenance is lacking - there is evidence outside of previous house- parties, with beer cans and dead flower arrangements left lying around. Inside, perhaps a quarter of the light bulbs do not work, the towels are ancient/ threadbare and upon arrival the cleaning was not good."

"The house was converted from an old tithe barn on a grand scale, with a magnificent sitting room and kitchen/dining room and 9 bathrooms. However that was 10 or more years ago and maintenance has really been neglected since. (The sitting room photograph on the website must have been taken quite some time ago) The sitting room furniture and kitchen fittings could now be most charitably described as "tired"; some light fixtures were not working, the sunshade was broken and waste bins lacked lids.On the plus side Mrs Pike was friendly and helpful."

"Lovely spacious house - plenty of room for large family gathering- with social space and room for privacy. Friendly helpful owner. Noisy- but beautiful- peacock!"

"Our party of 19 (aged between 6 weeks and 70+) enjoyed a lovely family celebration here. The ground floor and outside area were spacious and well-suited our purpose. There were some minor issues with equipment - eg a badly leaking kettle, a broken shower, but these did not affect our enjoyment of the week. The important areas - toilets, showers etc, were clean but some of the living areas could do with a bit of care and attention. We did feel that one towel per person for a week was not enough - probably better to take your own.We did have a problem with dogs from the farm and elsewhere wandering in uninvited - there are no gates to stop them - this often happened at mealtimes as the weather was good and we ate outside quite a bit. There is no mobile signal at all, and the WiFi only worked very spasmodically. Overall we had a good time and would consider going back there for future family gatherings."

"What a lovely spot - great house for all 17 of us. The kitchen equipment is a little tired but otherwise perfectly adequate. A grand house with a fabulous log burner and plenty of room for all of us to stretch out."

"Great House For A Get TogetherLarge but cosy; a quirky house with nooks and crannies, and with different staircases to various groups of rooms; a well-equipped kitchen with a huge dining table creating a focal point; a generous lounge with enough sofas for the whole group to snooze.Julia was helpful and attentive, whilst keeping up with her duties on the working farm. The wifi was workable; the mobile reception wasn't - get to know the land line number for the Tithe Barn as an emergency contact. The sixteen of us had a superb time in the house; we spent some time in the local pub, Bridport market, West Bay, and Furleigh Winery was well worth a visit. The Seaside Boarding House was a good recommendation, and a stroll down to the Hive Beach and the Hive Cafe for coffees completed an excellent Sunday lunch. We even had sunshine !"

"Beautiful, comfortable and very spacious accommodation. Just perfect for a large family to meet up, would love to visit again."

"This was a great place for our group of 15. The fact everyone had their own bathroom was great. The place is full of character and so spacious you are never on top of each other. One big moan is the Wi-fi. Owners need to invest in upgrading it. Super fast broadband is in the village so it’s possible! Seeing as no phone signal there either Wi-fi would have made all the difference"

"This property is stunning in its appearance and features which exceeded our expectations. There is definitely a wow factor as you first step in to the barn. The rooms are all en-suite and the communal areas are spacious. There is plenty of parking for cars. Underfloor heating downstairs is welcome and the woodburner was very welcome in the evening. The owners lit the woodburner for us twice and provided extra fee logs. There were a few issues with housekeeping which could easily be resolved in order to bring this property up to a 10/10 standard. Some items such as towels and bedding were a bit tired and could do with replacing. The owners were also difficult to reach at times as the property is on a working farm. With these amendments I would recommend this property to families and friends looking for a large, private house for a weekend or a week's holiday."

"Although the barn was an ideal size for our party it was sadly lacking in creature comforts. The bed linen was dated and worn and the towels were very thin and rather small. The kitchen was poorly equipped with a variety of mixed cutlery and china ; some of which was chipped. The entire barn needed a complete deep clean - the high ceiling was covered in large cobwebs. Also we had problems with the heating upstairs and one of the toilets didn’t work. Having said that the toldlers with us enjoyed the space to run about and we could all spread out and not get under each other’s feet. The whole place needs a thoroughly good clean and the towels, linen and kitchen equipment needs replacing."
