  • . Within 2 miles of the famous Chesil Beach and World Heritage Jurassic Coast and between West Bay and Portland Bill, this Grade II 13th-century stone tithe barn, situated in Litton Cheney on a working farm, has been restored and extended to provide excellent detached character accommodation for 19 guests, in this sought after part of West Dorset. It offers a great location for enjoying this holiday area, and boasts nine en-suite bedrooms (five doubles, one with an additional single, and four twins), each with TV, and a large kitchen, ideal for self catering with a large group. There is even the added benefit of a self-service bar, so you can keep your friends and family entertained throughout the evening. The original stone barn, now a very impressive vaulted and beamed living/dining room, comfortably accommodates eighteen. There is plenty of room for all; guests can relax and unwind in the large garden, the children can play in the games room equipped with pool table, there is fishing (by arrangement with the owner) in the 2-acre coarse fishing lake, or simply wander down to the village pub to wine and dine, or enjoy some glorious country walking.
Within a few minutes’ drive is Chesil Beach at Burton Bradstock which stretches for 17 miles from Portland to West Bay and is a unique shingle ridge and natural beauty spot. The pebbles on the beach are said to increase in size from east to west, the largest being at Portland where a centre for wind and kitesurfing can also be found. West Bexington and Abbotsbury are a short drive away with opportunities for swimming and fishing. Abbotsbury is home to the swannery which is a popular family attraction for holidaymakers and where visitors can walk amidst colonies of nesting mute swans in a natural wildlife habitat. Originally established by Benedictine monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury, the swannery was used to provide food for their banquets and has been featured in films including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The Abbotsbury Sub-tropical Gardens, which were established in the 1700s by the Countess of Ilchester, are another place of interest to visit. Magnolia and camelia collections are of particular note as well as rhododendrons and hydrangeas; a gift shop, restaurant and plant centre complete the facilities for a good day out. There is much to see and do in Dorset for families, especially at Weymouth, a short drive away, which offers many attractions including the Sea Life Museum, or visit Dorchester with its many attractions and shops. Further afield, family days out include Wool with its Tank Museum and Monkey World, or admire the natural arch of Durdle Door and the almost circular cove of Lulworth on the way to Wareham and the Isle of Purbeck. To the west one can see the magnificent World Heritage Coast and visit West Bay, Eype, Charmouth and of course the ever popular seaside resort of Lyme Regis, with its pretty harbour and Cobb. Shop 3 miles and pub 400 yards.

"We had a fantastic time. Brilliant social space, comfy beds and plenty of good got showers. Would definitely go again. Lovely host who kept us well stocked with logs for the amazing wood burner."

"This place was absolutely amazing, it catered for proper quality family/friend time! Yes it can do with a good clean but that didn’t hinder our holiday atall, The smell is natural, it is a working farm after all! Julie was attentive and accommodating and welcomed our children to be involved with meeting the animals. We will definately be booking again"

"It was a lovely place to celebrate my other half's birthday, overall we had a great time but the cottage could do with some TLC."

"Lovely barn conversion . Huge with lots of bedrooms with en-suites. On a working farm in the middle of a pretty, small village . Decor looking quite tired and kitchen equipment could do with a refresh but host great and wanted to know what maintenance would improve the farm. Overall we really enjoyed our stay"

"We spent three nights at the Old Tithe Barn in early October - a reunion of eight couples who first met at university in the 1970s. The Old Tithe Barn is a lovely building and, with all rooms en suite, this is, in many ways, ideal for large groups. We particularly chose somewhere which had a large table where we could all dine together - this was great, and made for very convivial evenings as we lingered over the meal, drinking wine and catching up with each other’s news. The very large lounge was generously furnished with more than enough seating for a large group. However, the property is let down by poor maintenance and a poorly-equipped kitchen. There were insufficient mugs for a group of 16, there was only one dishwasher (other properties of a similar size we have stayed at would normally have two) and many of the dinner plates were too large to go in the dishwasher. There was a hotch-potch of kitchen equipment, eg several casseroles but with no lids (the large Le Creuset was very burnt at the bottom and the lid had no handle). Cooking spaghetti bolognese on the Friday evening and chicken casserole on the Saturday proved to be a bit of a challenge. Some of the crockery and glasses in the cupboard were dirty. In the bedrooms, one room was short of a towel and another was short of a bath-mat but, as there was a spare room, we were able to take from there. If all the above issues are addressed, then we would be happy to recommend this to other groups."

"The barn has lots of space - great to have so many bedrooms with their own bath/shower toilet. There is a HUGE living space with lots of squashy sofas. And so much seating outdoors as well. We enjoyed breakfasts in the sunshine. Enormous table in the kitchen where our large party could eat & chat The crockery / pans / bed linen / towels have seen better days - which is such a shame as the place is such a great place to stay. There is a games area - table football snooker and board games The owner was helpful & cheerful A welcome pack of tea /coffee / milk would have been a nice touch ( maybe even a cake or local bread ??)"

"Excellent size and ample space for 16+. Let down a little by cleanliness and general wear and tear. Great location for a large family gathering."
    Kanta ‐ 4 Sep 2019
"The owners are very nice people. The rooms are good with own bathrooms. Concerns for us was the lack of clean facilities. Lots of flys and spiders. The owners dogs were lovely but some of us did not like them visiting us. We could not sit outside. The beds were uncomfortable. If all above is sorted I would be happy to give 9 out of 10."
    Inge ‐ 5 Aug 2019
"The Old Tithe Barn is a gorgeous building but unfortunately it is also very neglected. Apart from the bathrooms the house was very grubby and untidy. The whole place needs a thorough good clean and many bits and pieces need replacing, including the mattresses which were very lumpy. The only game in the ‘games room’ that was not broken/incomplete was giant Jenga. The outside furniture and garden need some TLC as neither is very inviting, plus the smell from the farm and all the flies put us off from eating outside. There was no welcome pack and the garden is not enclosed (the dogs from the farm kept appearing at the front door). A big bonus is the many bathrooms, not all en suite, and we did, despite the above issues, have a great week in Dorset. The local pub is a delight with very tasty food."

"We absolutely loved our stay at The Old Tithe Barn. Not only was it a wonderful building but it's the only place suitable for us that we can fit such a big gaggle of girls for our annual get together! We'll be back again for sure. Lovely building."
    Annie ‐ 24 May 2019
"A brilliant location, lots of space, very friendly owner (& dogs), great garden furniture. We would definitely book this again. The description however, needs updating, that garden is not enclosed, some upstairs rooms are not ensuite (shower rooms across the corridor) there are 2 doubles downstairs & 1 twin (description says 3 twins), 'ground floor facilities' is misleading as it still includes 2 deep steps to the bedroom wing. It is also a good idea to take hand towels as these are not provided. Pictures also show a fridge with icing making facility - this has been replaced - no ice."
    David ‐ 27 Mar 2019
    "Perfect for our group."
    Yvonne ‐ 16 Jan 2019
"We had a family celebration here and place catered for us all very well, plenty of space for all 18 of us, definitely on my list to go back too."
    Ian ‐ 8 Jan 2019
"Truly lovely barn conversion, perfect for a family gathering. Having a bathroom for each bedroom is a massive plus. This barn could easily be a 5 out of 5 star accommodation if there was a wee bit more attention to detail; it wasn’t that clean on arrival, WiFi is awful and really needs sorting, games room needs updating (pool table and cues in a poor state), garden area needs fencing off to prevent the farm dogs turning up (lovely as they are) and digging/toileting, mattresses not that good now and could do with updating. The above seems like a long list but the overriding feeling we were left with after the holiday was a positive one, the above changes would have made it perfect. If it was mine and I had to do just a couple of things on the list it would be fence off the garden and sort the WiFi, these two would make a real difference.Like I say, we had a lovely time, great local pub too!"
    Mrs P. ‐ 2 Jan 2019
"Many lights still not working! Bed linen and towels need replacing. All electrical appliances need maintenance. Despite these deficiencies we did spend a happy family Christmas at the Old Tithe Barn."
    Paul ‐ 3 Nov 2018
"Could not fault it in any way."
    Amber ‐ 28 Oct 2018
"Had a really good week, the old tithe barn was beautiful definitely love to return.Had a very comfortable stay and found the barn was tidy although it could have done with being abit cleaner (cob webs, dead flys)"
