    About this property

The Grain Store is a brilliant family property as it boasts fantastic shared facilities including children’s play area and games room.
Marshwood Manor offers excellent accommodation and facilities in a tranquil rural setting, surrounded by Dorset’s loveliest countryside, and only 5 miles from the unspoilt beaches and golden sandstone cliffs of the coastline. The estate’s 10-acres of lawn, garden, pasture and woodland offer plenty of room for adults to stroll and children to play.

The properties have been carefully formed from a fine original range of buildings next to the manor house and may be booked together to accommodate larger groups holidaying together (property refs DEY, DFA, DEX, DUS and DWS). Previously filmed for BBC television, all retain character and charm, whilst offering comfortable holiday accommodation fitted to a high standard throughout. Each has its own garden or courtyard with furniture, and all enjoy shared use of the extensive gardens and grounds. There is a large games barn with pool table and table tennis, and a children’s play area with swings and slide. Approached along a private drive and set well back from the road, the cottages are perfectly positioned for enjoying this delightful corner of Dorset.

There are a variety of beautiful beaches, both sand and pebble, within a five to ten mile radius, including those at Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, Eype, West Bay and Burton Bradstock. Fossil-rich cliffs define this dramatic stretch of coastline, which encompasses the 2,000-acre National Trust estate of Golden Cap. This is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and superb walking country, both on the rolling chalk hills overlooking fertile inland valleys and on the coastal footpaths offering spectacular clifftop views. It is also an area full of romance and history, with three ancient hill forts and the house and gardens of Forde Abbey all nearby.

A range of attractions is on offer in nearby country towns. Lyme Regis is a pretty seaside resort, its elegant colour-washed buildings and promenade lining a handsome harbour. Motor boats can be hired and there are fishing trips, a sailing school and a windsurfing school. Bridport is a thriving market town, featured on TV’s River Cottage, the Port Bredy of Hardy’s novels, offering a good choice of shops, inns, restaurants, an arts centre and a sports centre with indoor pool. The coastline is excellent for sea fishing and inland waters offer good coarse fishing. Golfers will find courses at Lyme Regis and West Bay and there is also horse riding nearby within 5 miles. Caterers are available locally. The local shop at Marshwood and two charming thatched country pubs are within a short drive. Shops 2 miles.

"Fantastic rural location and in a great setting. Nice and quiet. Only a short drive from nearby amenities including the main town of Bridport plus nearby pubs. The owners were very welcoming and the cottage was full of character which was ideal for our needs...and our dog!!!"

"If you want a quiet retreat this could be just what you're looking for. But be warned it's nearly 7 miles from the nearest town Bridport down mostly twisty single track roads. The only local amenities are 2 pubs within a couple of miles but I couldn't recommend them. The shave cross Inn is OK but has a very limitted menu. There is a small shop on site for the essentials you may have forgotten otherwise it's 7 miles to the nearest supermarket. The property is well equiped and very comfortable but there are no wardrobes in the bedrooms, so nowhere to hang your clothes except on hooks. The property could do with some maintenance and a bit of redecorating but it wasn't too bad."

"The Grain Store is excellently located for access to the Jurassic Coast. It is set in lovely gardens with a small, though attractive wood, both of which are perfect for the dog. The addition of a secure, fenced garden is also perfect for the dog.We were really delighted with the first impression on arrival, particularly how well stocked and clean everything was. It was great to be able to have a hot bath at the end of a day’s walking, with the choice of having a good shower as well in the morning. The wood fire in the lounge is a great feature and one of the reasons we chose to stay there. We were given a good supply of tinder and wood for our stay. Even though it was not too chilly in the evenings, it made the room warm and cosy. However, the condition of the double mattress in the master bedroom was appalling; we had to sleep in separate rooms as the springs came through so much in the double bed that I could only sleep reasonably comfortable in the middle, so Steve was forced to choose the best from the other beds, which also was not easy.We chose to stay at The Grain Store because of the location as well as the well-equipped games room, as advertised online, for evenings and rainy days. Sadly the pool table has been removed (damaged following inappropriate use by residents), the dart board could not be used (table tennis table in the way and no darts available, not supplied as it had previously been misused by residents), the table tennis table did not have sufficient space around it to be used (the room is now also used as a shop), and the football table is on its last legs. The information brochure is out of date with mis-information about local shops and amenities. The owners are really friendly and welcoming. We hope that our feedback will help them make some improvements, particularly with the mattresses (getting good quality replacements) as we would like to stay there again (with the caveat of comfortable beds)."

"A lovely cottage even better than described on website. Very friendly owner. Only thing to let the holiday down was the local unclassified roads, very narrow with high hedges, a task in itself to get to a main road..... But it was a very enjoyable holiday overall."

"All together we had a great time. The accomodation was spot on. Dogs walks just outside the door with others a short drive away."

"Roads to cottage are very narrow, not very good, lucky we didn’t have a accident."

"A wonderful cottage. Great location. Thank you"
    Emma ‐ 22 Apr 2018
"What a fabulous place, it was beautiful & quiet. The children loved the onsite playpark and the cottage had everything we could wish for. We went out for fabulous fossil hunting day trips and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We will be back for sure. The children said they missed the sheep being just outside the back garden once we got home!"

"Nice location, owners are lovely. Suits people with dogs, children like going out and about. Cottages are abit dated in some ways, heating is storage heaters, hard to control but if you were staying through the summer you probably wouldnt notice"

"A beautiful location and a warm welcome."
