I don't know when a representative of Sykes Cottages last visited Blagdon Farm (Ashwater, Devon) in order to update the photos and details on their website, but it must be several years ago! When we got there we thought we had the wrong place as it looked like the local rubbish dump or scrap yard. The "reception" was a dilapidated shed with a sign on it asking visitors to ring the bell and wait to be given the key to the lodge. We had a look around while waiting and were a little worried to see piles of scrap in one of the fields next to the Lodges and so much undergrowth leading down to the lake, that we weren’t sure where we were going to walk our dog. When the owner finally turned up, he spent 40 minutes telling us how the lodge had recently been upgraded and redecorated. I'm not sure who by, but maybe the decorator was going for the dirty, shabby look. They certainly excelled. The bathroom was the dirtiest I have ever seen, with black mould everywhere, toothpaste in the bottom of the water glass and I'm not even going to mention the toilet in case you're eating while you read this! There was a dried piece of used chewing gum on the kitchen work top and flies buzzing around. It was late by the time we discovered all this and our young son was hungry so I cleaned what I could. Luckily I had brought our son's bedding because the sheets on his bed had mould stains on them. There were no towels even though the website said these were provided, so had to use our towels I had brought for the swimming pool. The next day we spoke to the owner and asked why there were no towels. He gave some convoluted explanation that during COVID, visitors were getting fake tan on the towels so they stopped providing them. He kept saying that he had told Sykes on numerous occasions that they didn’t provide towels any more but they hadn’t changed the website. We then went to the building that housed the swimming pool and games room that’s also advertised on Sykes’ website. The pool was full of brown stagnant water and the games room was a storage room. To say that our son was disappointed is an understatement. I usually only leave reviews if there is something positive to say, but I feel that on this occasion I need to warn others that Sykes Cottages failed miserably with their website description and I would avoid Blagdon Farm as a relaxing, comfortable, clean destination.

The dogs where so peaceful the whole trip it’s as if they know what was going on and the staff where helpful in all ways possible. Would recommend this place to anybody who needs a break from the city life … deffo going to be a return visit to planned for next year

It is on a working farm with pigs and sheep in pens. Roaming free are geese, chickens and turkeys which is so lovely to see. The accommodation has a beautiful view over the fishing lake and has everything you need to enjoy your break. Take everything needed(food etc) as it really is rural so no local shops to stroll to. Bob the owner cannot do more to help, we had a fantastic time thanks to his knowledge of beaches shops etc. I wouldn't change a thing about this place and will definitely be returning
