About this property

High Bickington 2 miles. This modern detached holiday lodge is set in a purpose-built resort in over forty acres of woodland, on a hill above the River Taw, in well-known Tarka country in the heart of Devon. Being midway between the Dartmoor National Park and the long sandy beaches of the North West Devon coastline, this High Bickington holiday cottage is in an ideal position to enjoy a range of outdoor pursuits. The light and airy sitting room of this High Bickington cottage overlooks the wooded hillside and fields beyond. With two en-suite bedrooms, each with access to the balcony, there is plenty of privacy for groups and families in this well-appointed High Bickington holiday cottage. Outside, there are plenty of walks amongst the trees and down to the River Taw. From this High Bickington holiday lodge, why not explore some of the interesting local villages with their pretty inns, gift shops and farm food delicacies? Or, take a short drive to some spectacular sandy beaches including Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Woolacombe. The winding streets of the fishing port of Appledore are well worth a visit, as is the historic and very picturesque fishing village of Clovelly. For a spot of shopping there is the nearby Atlantic Village outlet centre, close to The BIG Sheep theme park. So there is something for the whole family in this area of Devon.

The small rural village of High Bickington is set in North Devon and has a Post Office and 2 pubs.

You will need a car. Rail connections to Barnstaple etc. are surprisingly easy from nearby Umberleigh station. The estuary and seaside towns of Bideford and Westward Ho! are delightful, and within easy driving distance. Walks from the chalet within the forest are magical and the district is well-maintained. The chalet itself was originally appointed to a very high standard indeed, with high quality natural wood furnishings throughout. However, there are a number of maintenance and organisational issues that need addressing. The tiny fridge freezer is totally inadequate, and barely accessible to those such as my partner Vicki who can't 'reach' the floor. With the best of intentions, I would recommend that the owners take advantage of the space occupied by the rather pointless dresser (which contains mainly ornaments and redundant electrical bits). It lurks in the corner of the kitchen where an upright fridge freezer unit that's accessible and sufficiently spacious would be more worthy of its footprint while ticking the box for everyday needs (there is no nearby shop and Tesco deliveries are not allowed on the site). The three toilets are very useful (!) The comfy master bed is approached on one side by a very narrow space and is also low-down. We are post-middle aged but our elderly parents would not have been able to manage anything on their own in this property. There are lots of helpful guide books, but the laminated instruction sheets have not been updated since 2012! And whilst I understand the logistics of expecting no welcome pack as the owners apparently live in Yorkshire, to arrive in a remote place without any basics provided (even milk) is not so forgiveable when someone has been seconded to provide fresh cut flowers instead! And I do think that the (pre-warned) lack of WiFi is not really acceptable in 2022. My EE reception was good, and had I not had oodles of data from my own hotspot then this forest location, I think, would've proved a little too much of an escape! Just get a cheap package, please... you'll be thanked for it. Don't get me wrong - this chalet is well-appointed and represents very good value for money. For younger people I would recommend it and we might come again, if the owners would have us. However, it's like a lot of my friends, really: there's a generally up-market aura about the place but it does need a bit of TLC! Paul.

. In bathroom upstairs underneath the basin and by the bathroom door. . Main bathroom no shower glass or curtains...needs room for improvement. No WiFi... so for emergency calls it was difficult. It would help for future. Other than that cottage was good! Thanks

Comfortable cottage set with other cottages in lovely woodland. About 30-60 minutes’ drive to beaches. To further improve, I would suggest a larger fridge (very small for four people), a shower curtain in the double room en-suite and some repairs to the oven doors (hanging off).
