About this property

… 1½ miles from East Portlemouth, eastwards along the coast, is Gara Rock, an utterly unique and spectacularly sited new development of 12 apartments and 5 cottages along with an excellent restaurant, all with fabulous, panoramic views seaward and towards the wild and rugged headlands of Prawle Point and beyond Salcombe Estuary to Bolt Tail. Once the dramatic site was home to a coastguard’s station; the thatched lookout hut remains. Now it is a place to relax and rejuvenate, hunker down and watch the ebb and flow of the tides rather than the clock. It’s a wild and remote spot, but also romantic and special - the sort of magical place that generations return to year after year. 

It is in a brilliant position for exploring the South West Coast Path that runs immediately below the development and hugs the coastline to the west, passing accessible coves en route to East Portlemouth (and the ferry to Salcombe and beyond), and eastwards towards East Prawle andStart Point. A footpath (steep in places) winds down the 550 yards from Gara Rock to unspoilt Rickham Cove (sandy, rock pools). 

The apartments and cottages have exclusive year-round use of the indoor swimming pool(kidney shape, 31’ x 17’ x 4’6”, available 8am to 8pm), jacuzzi, and sauna and steam room(available 12pm to 6pm). From the end of May until the end of September (8am to 8pm) there is also exclusive use of the outdoor swimming pool (50’ x 14’6” x up to 4’ deep) with changing rooms, showers and sunbathing terrace with loungers. The surrounding landscaped gardens are enclosed and carefully planted and there are lovely spots for sitting, relaxing and admiring the view. 

The contemporary restaurant (www.gararock.com/restaurant) for informal dining offers delicious meals and has a glazed wall for watching the view, plus terrace for outdoor dining, taking full advantage of the breathtaking views from its cliff-top position. 

The accommodation is set beyond the restaurant and within the enclosed grounds. Each apartment and cottage has sensational sea views; some have small balconies, others their own terraces overlooking the coastline. Inside, they are individual and finished to a high standard with well-equipped kitchens and smart bath or shower rooms. There are steps down from the car park. We currently let two cottages and five apartments. Damages Deposit £200. 

Apartment 12: a second-floor apartment on two levels. On the entrance level, open-plan living/dining/kitchen (slimline dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, freezer, TV/DVD) with door to balcony (table/chairs) with magnificent coastal views towards Prawle Point; single bedroom; shower-room (suite). Upstairs (stairgates), two further bedrooms under the eaves – a double (5’ bed) with French windows to small balcony and sea views, and a twin; bathroom (suite, shower over bath).
