About this property

This cottage was built originally as a farmhouse in the 1840s. It abuts the 15th century gatehouse at Tiverton Castle and is within the castle walls, with free tours available, in the town of Tiverton, Devon. It has been extensively refurbished and is one of the loveliest houses in Tiverton, with picturesque Gothic windows and ideally located for friends and families wishing to explore this historic part of the country. From the hall there is a well-equipped kitchen with a breakfast area where you can sit and enjoy your morning coffee or move into the dining room where you can appreciate the fantastic architecture in this lovely cottage. Relax in the sitting room by the welcoming open fire if the weather becomes a little colder, or wind down in the study. Outside is a pretty self-contained garden where you can put your feet up with a good book and a refreshing drink, or dine alfresco using the barbecue. On the outskirts of Tiverton lies the Grand Western Canal with an amazing 24 bridges along its 11-mile stretch. Built originally to transport lime, it is now a beauty spot with yellow flags and arrowhead, darting dragonflies, coots, mallards, and moorhens, with pleasant walking along the towpath, or trips afloat on gaily painted barges drawn by magnificent shire horses. Tiverton has a selection of interesting shops, while countless bargains can be found at the varied market of the historic Pannier Market. Events in Tiverton include the annual Mid Devon Show in July. Within a five minute drive is a leisure centre where you have access to a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and skateboarding and it is just ten minutes' drive to Tiverton Golf Course. Fishing is available on the River Exe and less than 2 miles away is the National Trust's Knightshayes Court, one of the finest surviving Gothic Revival houses built in the 19th century, with the garden being one of the finest in England. There are many other interesting local attractions, gardens and churches within easy motoring access and many wonderful village pubs to visit. This cottage is one of the loveliest in Tiverton, built within the castle walls.

The largest town in Mid Devon, visit Tiverton for echoes of the past including a romantic castle, and horse-drawn barge trips on the idyllic Grand Western Canal. Occupying a strategic position on two rivers, the Exe and the Lowman, brought Tiverton wealth as a flourishing textile town, resulting in many fine buildings.
