About this property

… about a mile from Southleigh, a large house beautifully converted from a barn (G191), large farmhouse (G190) and two detached cottages (G192, G193), all high on a hillside above a picturesque valley, with almost 180 degree views of amazing rolling countryside. They are surrounded by about 200 acres of fields and bluebell woods which you are welcome to wander and enjoy deer and badger watching, the stream, trout lake (fishing), duck pond (carp fishing) and the gorgeous views. An exciting range of activities is available (extra), including clay pigeon shootingamphibious vehicles and archery - tailor-made packages can be arranged. Peacocks strut the grounds, together with roaming chickens and ducks (eggs to collect), and the young, friendly owners who live next door are happy to show you their unusual pets (pigs, alpacas, ostrich, goats). Caterers can be recommended.

... The Shippen is a detached, split-level cottage built into the hillside, also looking over the same 200 acre farmstead where you are welcome to wander and enjoy the activities on offer. Surrounded by its own garden on various levels with steps between, paved at the front (low wall) and side with picnic benches (superb long views) and arch to gently sloping enclosed lawned area behind.

Neutral colours and modern fabrics/furnishings give an up-to-date feel to the original features, low beamed ceilings (lowest 5’5” above fireplace), flagstone floor and knobbly walls. Step up from porch to cosy living/dining/smart fitted kitchen (slimline dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, fridge-freezer) with lovely old flagstone floor (rugs), leather sofas, TV/DVD, iPod dock and electric ‘living flame’ fire; 6 oak steps (stairgate, low beam) up to rear hall with doors to terrace; smallish bathroom (suite with 4’6” bath with shower over); 2 more shallow steps up to roomy, high-ceilinged master double bedroom  (5’ iron bedstead, TV/DVD) with smart en suite shower-room (suite), and a neat twin (zip-linkable to 6’ double, TV/DVD). Cosy, quirky and comfortable with lots to do on site and a good base from which to explore east Devon’s villages and coast.

"We all had a wonderful time, Fantastic cosy cottage in idyllic location with Superb views of the countryside. We especially enjoyed our daily walks around the farm with our dogs Barkley and Poppy. Our daughter Ellie will miss the regular visit from Percy the Peacock for a biscuit. We look forward to booking again soon and would highly recommend it."
