Snaptrip says

Hiscox Cottage in Devon is praised for its stunning views, peaceful setting, and friendly owners. Guests enjoy the well-equipped cottage, the presence of animals, and the beautiful surrounding countryside. The garden is appreciated by dog owners, and the conservatory is a highlight for many. While some guests mention narrow access roads and occasional discomfort with beds, the overall experience is one of relaxation and enjoyment in a lovely rural retreat.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Most guests found Hiscox Cottage to be clean and tidy, contributing to a comfortable stay. However, a few mentioned issues such as cobwebs and a musty smell in one bathroom, which slightly affected the overall impression of cleanliness.

The location is highly praised for its amazing views and peacefulness. The narrow access roads are noted by some as challenging, but this seems to be an accepted part of the rural Devon charm. The proximity to local towns and attractions is also appreciated.

The cottage is generally regarded as comfortable, with a well-equipped kitchen and good facilities. However, there are comments about uncomfortable beds and the lack of sofa cushions due to COVID-19 restrictions, which impacts the comfort score.

Facilities are well-regarded, with guests appreciating the fully equipped kitchen, washing and drying facilities, and the garden. Some maintenance issues are noted, such as the need for firmer mattresses and better water pressure for baths, but overall, the facilities meet guests' needs.

While guests express gratitude for the peaceful environment and the amenities provided, there are no specific mentions of gifts or special thoughtful touches that would warrant a score in this category. Therefore, the score is set to null.

About this property

Hiscox Cottage is a detached cottage on the farmstead, smartly furnished with beams and oak floors. Steps lead up to the entrance door, or you can arrange level access. The open plan living space has a well equipped kitchen area, a seating area and doors to a terrace. The dining room doubles up as a conservatory, also with terrace doors. One of the bedrooms is situated on the ground floor with an en suite, and the other bedroom is found up open tread stairs with an en suite and balcony with seats. To the side of the cottage is an enclosed garden with lawn, summer house/games room and a sun terrace with picnic bench, barbecue and good views. With stunning surroundings, this is a lovely cottage for a relaxing break. Note: This property is on the same farmstead as Lower Wadden Farmhouse and Annexe and The Barn.

Beer is a small picturesque fishing village on the south Devon coast near Seaton. The shingle beach is very sheltered, backed by limestone cliffs and was once fertile smuggling territory, plus contraband was hidden in nearby caves, which are now a popular tourist attraction

Beautiful cottage well equipped and clean Very comfortable with amazing views would definitely recommend and want to return The roads up to the cottage are very narrow and remote but well worth the journey

The cottage is spacious and well equipped, and we especially enjoyed cooking on the small Aga during our stay. The wonderful views from the conservatory and balcony and the quiet walks on the lanes close by along with frequent trips to the beautiful coastal towns and villages that are all with a short distance made for a thoroughly pleasant and relaxing holiday. I’m sure we’ll come back!

The views over the valley from the conservatory are especially impressive. My only reservation was that the first floor bedroom roof is sloping so I had to watch my head (I am just under 6 foot). For dog owners, there are pleasant short walks around the farm, although accessing the public footpath network is a bit more challenging (gradient-wise). However, Bovey Down and Morgenhayes Woods are only a short drive away and the walks there are excellent. We tried all the roads in and out of Southleigh and they are all narrow and winding (watch out for tractors and delivery drivers). The recommended access route from the A3052 is probably the best one as it has more passing places.
